Hey ladies! What are your plans for returning to work after you have a child? I have been thinking about this A LOT lately. Is anyone not returning to work? I wish I could stay at home, but I think that I am going to have to go back. How long is average to stay home after you have a child? Thanks

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
I know I will definately not be coming back to work at my current job. I work in the city and the commute will be too much once I have a child.
If though we find it too hard to live the way we like just on my husband's salary, I'll look for something part time close to home.

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
I would love to be a SAH mom but with the cost of living on LI it would be tough.
My goal is to stay home for the first year and then go back to work part-time. Hopefully my mom will be able to watch the baby. I know she's looking forward to that!

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
My ultimate dream would be to be a SAHM. But, I don't think we can do that... I would like to work part time, or even flex time. I'm looking into things I can do from home as well. I can't imagine working FT and having the baby in day care all week..I think my heart would break.

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
Just wanted to add from a BTDT mom- it is much better to have a clear return to work plan before the baby arrives, and to review your insurance and disablity options. Also, make sure you add the cost of daycare into your plans= as it is NOT cheap.
If you want to look for a new job, start now. Don't wait until you are prego or need to return to work. Talk about added stress. It is A LOT hard to find a job quickly and you end up taking something you really don't want. Also, part-time work is NOT easy to find at the corporate level. Of course there is retail and other jobs like that for part-time workers. But if you have a corporate position and then go to a part-time retail position you will most likely be taking a huge cut in pay. And if you want to stay home for a while you may want to begin to add more to your 401K plans now, since you will not be adding to it for some time after you have the baby.
Just a few thoughts.

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
I have to say I'm lucky with the part-time stuff. Although a librarian's salaries are REALLY BAD (after paying back my students loans for my Master's there really isn't much left in my paycheck ) there generally isn't much of a difference between FT & PT salaries. And part-time positions are usually easy to find as libraries save $ on part-timers by not giving them benefits.

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
I am really nervous about this also. I know we cannot live on one income alone, but I dont want to work full-time if/when I become a mother for the first few years. This is why I am having issues with getting pregnant in the first place.
However, it will be really hard for me to go from earning a decent living in a corporate job to working part time in retail (not to mention feeling strange).. I have considered working in a bank or doing real estate also..
I give a lot of credit to the women who are balancing home/work life. It must not be easy. I dont know if I can handle the stresses of two demanding jobs. (being a mom and working outside the home.) I can barely handle juggling my home life and my current job in marketing and I have no kids...
It is such a shame that in today's society most women have to go back to work (not by choice) -- I don't understand it. My mom was able to be a SAHM in a house on LI and so were most of my friends mothers...what happened in the last 20-30 yrs?

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
I agree with Karen, I will love to stay home, but I don't think that I can. FH works 2 jobs as it is, and I want our children to see him I will try to get something close to home to make the extra $ part time.

I will be heading back to work about 2 months after the baby is born. I believe my company has it set up that you can get 6 weeks fo short term disability for maternity leave and I will be taking an additional two weeks off (that I will take out of vacation time)

DH and I agreed that I will be a SAHM once we have children...we both feel it's best for the children and I'll return probably to a PT job once they are in school FT. BUT, we are planning on leaving NY, so that is a huge factor in this decision.

I am not sure if we will have kids but I do know if we have kids I am definately going back to work. I work too hard to get my masters degree and current position to give that up to be a SAHM or work retail part time.

I would love to be a SAHM too! But I don't think we could afford to live on one salary. We won't be TTC for a few more months and I hoping that maybe in a few years when baby #2 comes along I will be able to SAH.

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
DH and I have been saving hard for this. We really want me to be a SAHM. Part of why we are waiting is to save up the nest egg. We hope to TTC in 2006, but I can't help to peek here now for all the tips
We want 3 and daycare in the SF, CA area is $1200 month, so my salary would be less than daycare for 2-3 little ones. I do hope to find something I can do from home to supplement his income when the time comes...

Re: Work plans -after the baby is born
I will definitely being staying at home for the first year. Day care is really expensive these days - so I will just have to watch my money more carefully.
Actual timeline for staying home really cant be determined until all these events happen, I would love to stay home a couple years but who knows
