Re: Working in NYC vs LI

Wacky - I graduated with my undergrad in Healthcare Administration. You don't hear of too many people with that degree. I came out of college and got a job in the city, because that was the cool thing to do. I got a job working at Memorial Sloane Kettering. I hated the commute after awhile and I was paying so much money with the LIRR and the subway. I am now on the island but I miss the city. I loved going out shopping during lunch hour or going out for a drink after work. I now work within fifteen minutes of my home but at times Long Island can get so boring. I get tired of looking at so many strip malls.

I am sure it is tough finding a job anywhere right now considering the economy right now.

Re: Working in NYC vs LI

I am actually going through this dilemma right now. I worked in the city for 2 years and the commute from Ronkonkoma was too much. So I decided to come to LI and now work in Nassau, but deal with traffic and congestion, an entirely different headache.

I too miss running out for lunch or shopping during the day. Now, to get anywhere to run a few errands encompasses my entire lunch time.

As much as I didn't like the commute, I enjoyed the 'unwinding' time on the train.

Re: Working in NYC vs LI

I hated being on the LIRR schedule...but when I moved near a subway it made a HUGE difference...

there are pros and cons...it is very similar to your decision to live on LI or in NYC...

Re: Working in NYC vs LI

I work in the city and wouldn't have it any other way. I would say generally the pay will be higher and the opportunities would certainly be greater in NYC, but of course there are always exceptions. My job doesn't exist in LI (I'm in publishing). I say look in the city, it is a world away from LI. Personally, I think I would go crazy if I worked and lived on LI!

Re: Working in NYC vs LI

There was an article somewhere recently, maybe in the NYTimes, about how NYC experience - no matter what the industry - means a lot to employers. Certainly it means you can thrive among tons of competition.

IMO, everyone should give the city a try. Even if it's just for a couple of years I think the experience will be rewarding personally and professionally.

Re: Working in NYC vs LI

I worked in the city for five years - I moved there and paid about 2/3rds of my salary to live in a 7X10 walk in closet, but I loved it! This was my early to mid-20s and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything (I met my husband on a city volleyball league)

Anyway - My job offered a promotion on LI and so I moved myself and husband out here. I'm so much happier now - sure I miss the convenience of shopping and happy hour and not driving all over the place. But now I have a huge two bedroom apartment with an eat in kitchen and laundry room for the same rent I was paying for a tiny room in a rat/roach invested building. I also don't have to walk pass the dog/human? poop on the subway steps in the morning or pretend to ignore a homeless person everyday.

My husband currently works in the city (for the same salary as me) and is going to search for a job on LI now.

I'm sorry to be downing the city - I do still love it, but I appreciate it much more when I visit on the weekends and don't work there everyday. I would definitaly recommend working/living there when you are in your twenties.

Re: Working in NYC vs LI

Well gee - that doesn't mean you shouldn't go there now - Ever watch sex in the city? They're all in their 30s and having a blast - and I know plenty of people enjoying themselves there in their 30s and above!

I'm sorry! If you've never worked there-why not try it for a year! You might like it!
