We didn't want brown ties and brown vests.......we were thinking of the classic burberry check tie, but a brown vest wouldn't go? any suggestions? is there a brown-ish burberry tie?

I wouldn't mix brown and black. I would probably put the guys in charcoal suits with rich brown shoes and belts. Then you can do anything with the ties.
ETA: What time of the day is your wedding?
i kind of agree...i'm not a fan of mixing the black w/ the brown, i like the idea of charcoal or grey suits...but it's your wedding, totally up to u!!
Ehhh I don't think I would do charcoal for a evening wedding. My friend did it for his Sunday afternoon wedding and it went well but not for an evening wedding.

the wedding is in the evening........530CH 630-1130 reception
Hmm, ok. Well, to be honest, brown isn't typically the first choice I think of for the evening even though i LOVE the richness of chocolate brown and wear it all the time during the day, but no worries since you've committed to that. I think I would probably do the guys in one of the following:
1. Traditional tuxedo
2. Gray suit, bown shoes, white shirt and then a complimentary tie (i.e. a gold, burgundy, etc. -- perhaps something that compliments the girls bouquets).
I think my preference is for the tux. Another option might be a black suit with a complimentary tie such as gold (this might work especially well if the girls are in gold shoes). I think though that the one thing I wouldn't do is mix black and brown, and I've always found that to be a big style faux pas.
