Is my wedding location going to be taken away by SUNY Stony Brook? Will the beautiful scenery and property be dwarfed by a large technology building and sounds of construction?
Here is the article:
State Court affirms University's right to acquire undeveloped Flowerfield property
The State Supreme Court Appellate Division has unanimously affirmed the University's right to acquire 246 acres of the Flowerfield property, contiguous to Stony Brook, through an eminent domain proceeding.
In a strongly-worded ruling, the Court concluded that 'extensive environmental impact studies' had been performed and that the acquisition 'to achieve the desired public purpose is rational….' The site will be anchored by a planned Center for Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) that would enhance the region's ability to create and attract high tech industries and stimulate job growth.
Stony Brook President Shirley Strum Kenny said, 'This is wonderful news for the region. The Governor's Center of Excellence initiative is going to benefit the people of Long Island through tremendous advances in research, at which Stony Brook excels.'
The property is currently zoned for light industrial use—precisely the use the University has in mind—so no zoning change will be required. Construction of the 100,000 square-foot CEWIT is planned for early 2006.
