Worst thing imaginable-UPDATE

Original post by concon361

I found out yesterday that someone got a hold of my ATM card number and pin (i did't lose it and no one stole it, I still have the card in my possession). But to add insult to injury, not only did they get away with money, it was from the wedding account! Although I am insured and the money goes back, I feel absolutely helpless and violated!
I have spent all day contacting every agency under the sun to make sure that I am not an identity theft case!
So my advise to you from this experience:
-Do not use mom and pop ATMs (they could have a scanner attached to them)
-Change your pin number every 6 months or so
-be careful when entering your pin number anywhere, you never know who is watching you

I hope that this never ever happens to any of you, it totally s*cks. I hope they catch these people, but I am sure that they were long gone as soon as my account was frozen!

Update:
THey put all of themoney back in my account today! Every penny!! Washington Mutual saved Christmas! Thanks for all of the

Same thing happened to me almost two years ago. I didn’t lose my card or anything but this person went on a shopping spree on me, wiping out my entire account…I had just gotten paid!!!

Citibank gave me grief about getting my money back (they did eventually give it back – months later, plus they returned all overdraft and NSF on my account and then some). Anyway, to cut the long story short, I was able to figure out what happened after a lot of investigation…I was so mad, I filed a complaint w/ the cops and hounded them till I got help.

Here’s what happened – I used my card at Nine West, it didn’t wouldn’t swipe, so the girl at the counter manually punched the numbers in, well what I didn’t pay attention to then was that she also quickly wrote down something. I didn’t think anything of it then but it actually turned out that she wrote my card number and expiration date ALONG with the security code in the back. See, I was too busy admiring my new pair to notice anything. The crazy part of it was that all the did was make a new credit card (at home – no less) with my number and her name and off she was!!! The whole thing sounded like a movie to me! Well, the investigators did find a card making machine in their home and all. She was persecuted and I was ecstatic. It lasted about a year and it was well worth it for me.

You totally gave me hope! I want to nail these guys to the wall....it is interesting to see how many people this has happened too...good grief, I am so scared that in like 6 months, I am going to get bills for 'no interest credit' cards that someome else applyed for.
I think the small grocery store is my situation.
Who knows

Re: Worst thing imaginable

I can relate in Oct, there was a dealth in my family, I flew to N/Carolina, I lost my ATM card in the airport on the way back, some one used it (i got the $$ back b/c I bank w/ Citibank...

BUT.....

I had checks out & when I called to cancell my card they froze my acct so all my checks bounced and I 'm still fighting them on the $30 fee per check

Citibank will give you your money back but NOT without grief. Luckily for me when it happened, I was at work at the time most of the charges were made so I had to send them proof (e-mails back and forth from my work account) that I was at work in DC and these charges were made in Baltimore over an hour away...totally couldn't have been me!! But you will get every overdraft and NSF fee back.

Re: Worst thing imaginable

actually, my friend who's a cop, just told me about this 2 days ago. What they are doing now is attaching scanners to the atm's. and it's not just the mom and pop ones. they have actually been using branch atm's also. so anytime you go to an atm, before you put your card in, jiggle the black rim around the area that you put your card in, b/c that's where the scanner is. they attach it to that part.

freakin scary! i know. i'm so sorry this happened to you. i'm glad that you are getting your money back. thank goodness for that!
