I don't know the reading but it sounds cute to me. I love that story.

Re: Would it be cute or cheesy?
This is it...
'What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”
“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but Really loves you, then you become Real.”
“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit.“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”
“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get all loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

It is my absolute favorite book. I thought it would be nice, but is it too hokey?

My friend had his 32 year old best (female) friend read that has his wedding 2 months ago. It was sweet.

Honestly - I don't like it. But it's one of things that's all up to your interpretation of it. I just personally don't see that relating to a wedding. If you love it - go for it. As for a 12 year old reading it, I don't know about that...I'm trying to picture the 12 year olds I coach reading that and I think they would be pretty embarrassed and feel like they were too old to be reading a children's story. I would suggest someone more mature or even younger to read it.

I think it's cute. I was actually going to have my 11 year old god son do the same exact reading at our ceremony - however, they do not allow you to do a non-biblical reading at a catholic ceremony. I ran it by him before I asked the church and he was all for it - wasn't embarrassed at all (he's a very outgoing and confident kid)
I say go for it if your niece is willing :)

Re: Would it be cute or cheesy?
If it means something to YOU - do it.
My mom and I danced to Puff the Magic Dragon. That's the song she sang to me every single night when I was little. We both know the words by heart.
Some probably thought it was cheesy but it made me, my mom, and my siblings feel absolutely and positively loved.
I had the MC preface the song with 'this is the song her mother used to sing to her'. Maybe you can have your reader preface it with something as well so you can clue your guests in as to why it was chosen.

If it means something to you, then I say do it... It all depends on what readings YOU want to be a part of YOUR ceremony.. Who cares what other people think!
