Would it bother you if your man was athletically challenged? story to follow

We had a BBQ upstate this weekend with a bunch of our friends. We had such a good time.

Well the guys were all playing football and various other sports all day. Toward the end of the day they engaged in a softball game. My FH is good at everything so he hit like 2 Homeruns. I was cheering in on Some of our other friends also played well. Now there is this one guy who is NOT very graceful. He struck out 3 times, when he was playing shortstop, he could not even catch the balls. All the guys were ridiculing him as were some of the girls. Well this guy tried to find the humor in it, but you could tell that he was upset, not to mention his fiance was there and she looked so embarassed. Everyone else was able to cheer for their guys and she looked so upset because her guy kept messing up .

Later I told FH that maybe they took it a little too far.

My question is how would you feel if this was your guy?

I'd cheer him on like he was Mike Piazza!

It's such a guy thing to ridicule like that, and very elementary school-ish!

I would not have been embarrassed at all!!!! I would have cheered him on anyway!!!

When it's all friends just hanging out, playing games...there is really no reason to ridicule....

I guess you guys are right, but I guess my question was- do women want a man who is athletic?

I really am glad that my Fh is. When we have kids he will be able to play catch with him and do other things.

Our friend cannot play any type of sports at all

Cheer him anyway... not ALL men are good at sports. Just like not ALL women can cook (or some other analogy). I wouldn't ridicule him for it! Theres nothing wrong with a man that isn't athletic. We have a friend like that, he knows hes bad, everyone else knows he is... but he played ball with them anyway and no one ridiculed him and everyone still had fun!

I don't think I could have dated a guy who wasn't athletic at all. I am not super athletic but when I was younger I always played sports with my brother and their friends and I guess always felt like that's what guys do. DH likes to play sports of all kinds and although he isn't a superstar (he's good just not superstar!)- he plays and tries hard. I enjoy that.

I did date a guy once who was athletic and fit but didn't really like watching or playing many team type sports (he like tennis and golf not baseball and football) - it was a turnoff to me.

But there are plenty of woman who don't mind or don't even know that their guy isn't athletic because that just isn't their thing.

Niecey, I know what you mean.

I love an Athletic guy, someone who is into sports. It is so cool because FH and I can talk about sports, and watch them together. I know who is getting traded, I know stats. It is great!!!!

When I see a guy who cannot even catch a ball or shoot a basket I get really turned off. My FH is on the bowling team, the softball team, basketball, etc etc. I do get annoyed because at times it interferes with my plans, but at the same time I love that he is active in this sense.

No it wouldnt bother me! Matt is into fishing (which in my opinion isn't a sport) and other than that he is busy with the house and his boats. He makes himself play baseball and football with the kids but he isn't into it.

I would chear him on with encouragement and pride. It never really mattered to me if a man is athletic or into sports. Im not very athletic myself. Somehow I ended up with a total jock. DH used to play rugby at the national level. He has played just about everysport you can think of. At 46 and after a kidney transplant he still gets out there and plays softball every weekend.

My husband isn't athletic at all. He never played sports in school and really doesn't have too much interest in sports (I'm the family sport fanatic). However, if he did go out there and try to play I would give him my complete support.

Men get so caught up in sports sometimes you would think they were on a pro team. They act like the survival of the whole world is resting on the outcome of a game that is just for fun. Maybe she was embarrassed for him, not of him. It's not fun watching someone you love get made fun of. Jerks!!!!!

Doesn't bother me much. But ironically I have only dated athletic people. People that played basketball, football, baseball and were in HS and college teams.
There are some sports some men are just not good at. I am a better drive range shooter than FH is. Surprisingly. I am also a MUCH better swimmer than he is as I used to swim for my jr hs team. He can barely do doggie paddling! LOL But its okay for me. I encourage and cheer when he needs it good and bad. He can admit that he su ck s at some sports and glorifies me when I am better than he is. And even though he isn't the greatest at some sports, he tries anyway and takes and makes humor about himself just fine.

You have to be able to make fun of yourself in order to accept criticism and jokes from others about you.

ETA: since when can't we write s*u*c*k*s* on here?

No, it wouldnt bother me at all if DH was not athletic. Mine used to be in school but after a couple of knee surgeries and a badly broken leg he doesnt risk it anymore.

But if he were to play softball and he sucKed - I would cheer him on and boo all of his 'friends' that were making fun of him. I would NEVER tolerate that!

I have to be honest. It would bother me. But that's because I am so into sports and if I couldn't go to the park with my hubby and throw the ball around, I would feel as if I was missing out on something. It's not that I would be embarrased, it's more of that we would have a conflict of interest. And trust me, sports are huge in my life, so it would really be hard for me.

Wendy, I'm right there with you!
Sure God love my FH, but, he was not raised in the athletic world. He plays guitar and likes Nascar.
I work in sports, love sports, have played sports (basketball and volleyball) in college. Everyone I had dated before hand loved sports as well. Even if they didn't like it, they knew something about it. I've discovered that I'm teaching FH the game of football & basketball. Isn't that ironic?
FH says when we have kids, he definitely wants them to be athletic and he'll read books and learn to play w/ them! This is going to be interesting.

Nrvbrd- I would cheer him on as if he was in the superbowl!!!! No matter how old we are, we can all use encouragement and support for everything we're trying. I respect that 'shortstop' for trying!

id probably try and positivly encourage him..

i never had a problem with that because my fiance is very athletic in the sports he plays.. but i remember there was one team he was on and one guy on there never, did anything good for the team and his gf came down to every single game.. i always wondered how she was able to do it.. he seriously did nothing on the team except hurt them..

My FH is bad at sports, adn when he runs he kinda waddles... I think its cute. When we first started dating I had to teach him about hte game of football.. he didnt know points, what yards were or what firs and ten meant... Ok... not many women do either, but MEN- NOT know FOOTBALL?!?! LOL...
If That were us, I would have stuck by him and cheered him on or made fun of all the jocky guys.... do something to lighten the mood! LOL
