Re: Would like this as a favor?

Just a note - If you store oil in a clear container in direct light and near the stove it can spoil. Oil is a fat and does go bad. I found this on the web and heard about this from Alton Brown my fav food network guy!

I have WAY too much time on my hands and I am a Google FREAK!

My point? Maybe include this nifty factoid with your favor? I don't know... Just a random thought. I love the idea of using it for soap.

'Olive oil goes 'rancid' (the scientific term) because of oxidation, in which the oxygen in the air reacts with chemicals in the oil to produce peroxides - compounds that, while they might possess the desirable ability to turn a young lady's hair yellow, do nothing whatsoever to enhance the flavours of a Greek salad. This oxidation is accelerated by the oil's contact with air, heat, and light, which means you should store your oil in a cool, dark place, and not in a clear bottle next to the stove.'

How do you store olive oil? Olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark place. Properly stored, olive oil can keep for at least two years, in an unopened container. Olive oil should not be stored in the refrigerator. If chilled, olive oil will become cloudy and eventually solidify or crystallize. Should this happen, the oil is perfectly fine; just leave the oil at room temperature for a time to restore it to its natural state. Buying olive oil in dark green glass further protects it. The four enemies of olive oil are: air, time, heat, and light. It is best to buy only what you will use in 2 months, once opened. The oil will not go bad in this time, but it's fresh flavor and scent will fade.

How long does olive oil stay good? Evoo is optimum for 18 months after harvest, which ends in January of each year. A bottle of olive oil should be used within 2 months of opening, as, once open, it begins to oxidize, loosing freshness. Our olive oils are harvest dated, to insure freshness. Olive Oil is a fresh product and does not benefit from aging.

I like it, it is different, but unless you are giving two I don't think people will use it.

I know that I have 2 that are a set, that I use everyday, so unless you were giving two, i would probably leave it in the box and put it in the closet with the rest of the favors I don't have a use for. Just b/c I wouldn't want to break up my set.

100% go for it!!

I gave out handpainted ceramic oil bottles at my wedding and they were a HUGE hit. Everyone can find a use for them or display them in their kitchen. My whole family and my in-laws are shocked and call me all the time saying we were at so and so's house and they had out your favor. We got so many phonecalls that it was different and practical.
