A family friend who got engaged a few months ago set up a registry. She then emailed us and other family friends to tell us that she had finished her registry and didn't say anything else. I thought maybe they were going to do an e-party or something, so FH and I didn't buy anything from the registry until a few weeks ago, when it became obvious there wasn't going to be an e-party. Well, we had already shipped the present but it hadn't arrived yet, and since we wanted it to be a surprise we didn't tell them anything was coming, AND THEN before they got it her fiance called us to ask where their present was! I thought that was really rude, to think that just because you set up a registry a year before your wedding but don't have an event that people are just going to start buying you stuff anyway. They bought us a present but that was for our e-party, which is why we were waiting for a party for them. If we hadn't already shipped the present, I had half a mind to return that gift and buy them like a potholder or something
