Ok, you know if *I* think someone's going too far, they probably are.
My friend just IMs me with an important question. He's all pissed off. They bought some guy a wedding gift that included a loofah (like for shower gel or whatever), and someone called it a 'poof' and he said that was SO ignorant of them, b/c it's 'not even the proper word' and moreover, it's a word used to derogatorily describe a homosexual person in some parts of the english speaking world.
I was like 'um..it's poofy, like a cloud.....british people call ciagrettes fags, and they're not offending anyone'
I'm trying to see where this guy is coming from, can anyone help me out? Right now I', just laughing, which isn't nice....but...wow..

huh? he got offended b/c someone called a loofah a 'poof?' that seems a little high strung to me, thats not something i would get offended over.

Ok...as lng as I'm not the only one who thinks he's being ridiculous. I want to tell him hes's being stupid, but I don't want to be insensitive. but to me, I'd probably call it 'one of those poofy shower things' cause I think 'loofah' sounds stupid

Ok, I told him he's being stupid....
I would never even have made a connection b/w one and the other, and I'm usually really sensitive to language that could be construed as hateful or derogatory

I was all too at first. He said they were ignorant because they called it a 'poof', and poof is a word used like 'fag', where 'fag' is a cigarette, a gay person is a 'poof', where 'poof' is a shower tool, 'fag' is a gay person.
I totally didn't make the connection...
he started it out all dramaticall like 'you know what 'poof' means, right?' and I thought he was gonna say somecalled him a poof or something....and all along it was about shower gel

Now as a cousin of three gay men I have never EVER heard of a poof as being someone who is gay NEVER.

'poof' is/wass a term for gay peole, but I think moreso in austrailia and britain or something..
I also think it was used in the US in the 50's or something..I don't know..even so...
