My dad passed away over 20 years ago and when he died my momput her e-ring in storage. She always knew it would be for me and when FH and I were together for 3 years and knew we wanted to get married she offered it to him to propose to me.
I love my ring. It is so beautiful- 2ct oval stone with baguettes in platinum. I always said I would never change the setting because it was cool to have a piece of jewelry that my father chose - since I barely knew him (I was 5 when he died).
Lately I have been thinking of changing the setting. The platinum is a little dull (after all the ring is over 25 years old!) and b/c of the way the ring is set it doesnt shine as well as it could. I would love it to be set higher and stand out a little more. The diamond has so much potential and I was thinking of changing my setting when I went for my wedding band so they fit next to each other perfectly. My mom says I should do whatever I want with it becasue it is my ring!
Am I being ridiculous? What would you do?

My e-ring was my grandmother's ring (not an e-ring). But i love it and would not change a thing about it - it's so different.
But you should do what you want especially if it's ok with your mom.

Could you maybe put a different stone in the old setting that way you could still wear it and wear your e-ring with your new setting? I think it would be ok to change it as long as you feel ok about it.

Sorry but I wouldn't even think of doing that. It kind of defeats the purpose of wearing your mom's ring if you change it.

sounds like you love the way the ring looks, you just want to accentuate different aspects of it.
I say re-set it in practically the same format, just in a new band of platinum and a little higher, so that when you lookk at it, it is still the same ring your father chose, just customized for his lovely daughter.

I agree. If you are essentially keeping the 'look' of the ring but just enhancing it then go for it.

Personally, I don't think I would be able to change it.
The platinum could be redipped or polished to brighten it up. Maybe the jeweler could raise the center stone for you a bit?
The ring sounds gorgeous and it so nice to have something so meaningful from both of your parents

That's exactly how I feel!
I do love the way the ring looks...its not like I want to change it from having side stones to being solitaire or even shange the type of side stones...all that I would keep the same, just brighten up the platinum and the look of it a little so it looks new but still has the same cherished gift feeling. I guess I just have to think about it some more!
Thanks for all of your opinions!

JMO - I would never change it. Did you try taking it to a jeweler. I just found a jeweler that I love - FM me if you want to know. I had my E ring cut down 2 sizes (yes I'm 5'6 with hobbit hands I guess!) and the jeweler let us sit back in his room while he did it. He could probably buff it or something to make the platinum shine. good luck

You can wear your mom's ring and save your ring for you child.
FYI: Plat. needs to be polished once every so often, not just cleaned. I learned this b/c I just got my wedding band and after they cleaned my e-ring it still looked like _rap next to the wedding band. I don't think its that expensive to polish either.

My opinion, but I personally wouldn't change a thing about a ring like that... so much history, so much sentimental value... you can pass it on... to me those values far outweigh the 'look' of the ring...

I don't think that's necessarily true. I'm wearing FH's grandmother's diamond but in a setting that's right for me. It's still the sentimental value but it makes it mine as well.
If your mom's ok with it, go for it.

Honestly, I wouldn't even consider gettinga new setting. If I were you, I would just have the ing redipped so that platinum would be fresh and shiny. Other than that, I probably wouldn't do anything else.

My e-ring was my fiances grandmothers. It is a tiffany setting (single round stone is a simple platinum band), however I was having a really tough time finding a wedding band because the setting so was old.
I recently change the setting so that I could have a matching band.
I struggled with this decision for awhile, but it was the best decision for me. It really comes down to you. Ask your mom her opinion.

You could take the ring to a reputable jewelrr and see what they recommend. They might be able to polish the platimun and change things slightly, while preserving the integrity and sentimentality of the ring.

My mom passed away when I was 15. When my sister got married(she's the only girl) my dad took the diamond out of my mom's engagement ring, and put on to a necklace. My sister wears it all the time. Maybe that can be an option if you decide to change your setting. Good luck!
