My cousin got married two years ago and I loved her dress. She offered my her dress for my wedding. Would you take it? Also, do you think it was an 'empty' offer-- meaning she told me I could wear it thinking I would never say yes. The thing is, I really lover her dress. But if I were in her shoes, I don't think I would offer it out. What do you think?

If money was tight and she was sincere...yes, I would. If she isn't sincere, you will be able to tell by her actions after you accept her offer (she will stall or make excuses or something like that). But if I had my choice, I would want my own dress. It's your wedding day...

I would want my own dress too, so I wouldnt use hers. If you can afford it, you can maybe buy something similar?

If you like the dress and if money is an issue then I would accept the dress but change it a little. Maybe add some details, straps, different bustle? Do you have a pic of the dress?

Re: Would you do this?
I was in a similair situation. My mom was stuck on we wearing her dress that she was married in and I wasn't crazy over the idea. I really wanted my own dress. I ended up having her dress altered to fit me and made some changes. Her dress was very 80's style, poofy sleeves, covered back and I HATED it. I had the sleeves taken off and a veil made from them and I had the back taken out. Anyway, my point, finally, I wore her dress to my ceremony and I bought my own for the reception. I changed dresses before I did my grand entrance and my guests loved it. Maybe you can wear your cousins dress to your ceremony and then buy your own for the reception. That way you get the best of both worlds.
I really don't think she would have offered it to you, if she didn't want you to wear it. I offered my dress to one of my BM's and she wants to wear it but also wants her own. She is debating over doing what I did, or just wearing mine. I wouldn't have offered if I didn't want her to wear it. Hope it all works out

if she is really sincere about the offer and you like the dress then why not?

I agree, if you really love her dress and money is tight, I would take her up on her offer. If you tell you want to wear her gown and she seems uneasy or says no than you know she wasn't sincere.

If she is really sincere and money is tight, i say why not? But if you can afford your own dress/dont think she is being sincere try to get your own.

I would personally get my own gown, and incorporate your favorite parts of her dress. Though it is a nice offer, she might feel differently when it comes to having the gown altered to fit you.

Re: Would you do this?
I really wouldn't mind wearing the dress, especially if you loved it and if she truly would love for you to wear it without reservations to any alterations you would make. She is part of your family and I think it is generous to offer something with sentimental value. Dresses are expensive and they usually get only that one use, although it is for the most important day of your life. As long as you don't envision putting it on again for your 1st anniversary (which I've heard of people doing) I say go for it! Whatever will make you and her happy is what I vote for! Good luck!

I agree. Try talking to her about it and see if you can gauge her response to find out if she really thinks it would be ok for you to wear it.

I might do this - like you could change the neckline or add a little something. . I think you can make it your own and if you liked it - why not?

Thanks everyone!! Its not really a money issue (although saving would be awesome) I just really really loved her dress. But at the same time, I really want my own.... a dress that looks exactly like hers. haha.

Did you try on any dresses yet? I would try on a ton and if you still feel like you would want to wear hers then do it! Its your day and do what makes you happy!

Re: Would you do this?
Since I see you said it's not a money issue, I think she was probably thinking how you loved her dress, why not offer it? We all love to save money right about now! I believe she was probably sincere since after my wedding my dress will either be donated or trashed - I'm just not a sentimental person - maybe she is the same way.
