please don't laugh at me...this is my worse fear...since DH's father died young...and his mom was left pregnant (with DH) and with a toddler at age 30 (which I turn in 2 months)!!! that DH will die young...
we are going to TTC very soon...and I am going to play it by ear...if it happens quickly...then maybe I don't have to think about it...but if not...I have been thinking about freezing his sperm...
DH has been trying to quit smoking...but its hard...and he has a few extra pounds...
have you ever thought about it?

Re: Would you freeze your DH's sperm?
Aw! Erica!! Try not to go there in your head. Just because his Dad died young doesnt mean he will. My DH's Mom has Alzheimers as do a few of her siblings and DH sometimes 'jokes' about ending up with Alzheimers. It scares the *#&$ out of me but I try not to go too crazy with it.
As for your question, I never thought of it for us, I guess because we have a child. But I really had something on my mind today that this reminded me of. DH is a FDNY Lt. and of course knew alot of guys who died on 9-11. One was a good friend of his from his FDNY soccer team who just got engaged in June 2001. Anyway...for the past 2 years there has been soccer tournaments to raise money for his memorial scholarship. And his family and fiancee are always there and the bring them out to recieve the check. I am haunted constantly by his fiancee and the sadness she has endured and I mourn for what she will never be able to have with the love of her life, the gifts I have like a husband and living our life together...and a beautiful child like we am so blessed with.
I certainly would think that if someone could have a part of their husband that if the husband was gone to still have a child that is a part of both of them, I could never fault them for it.
Do you know what the legal aspect is? I'd be curious.
it hasnt consumed me yet....but I started thinking about it last week...there was a woman whos husband was in an accident...in a coma..and before they took him off life support...they took his sperm and impregnated her...His parents were for it...so they didn't have issues...
I know my MIL wouldn't have problems either...I'm just getting nervous as we near TC...

Re: Would you freeze your DH's sperm?
Yes, but we have totally didn't reasons. Dh is a pilot and the radar in his plane has been known for frying their sperm count and also for only making girls. But we don't plan to have children for atleast another 2 years and that point some minor damage might be done. So we are freezing some of his sperm. Our other reason for it is due to any chemical posioning he may recieve during his career or any wierd vaccines the military may choose to give him, we do not want that to affect our ability to have our own children.
We know many people who were affected by our last reason after the first gulf war.
Yabbobay, please don't be worry about your husband due to his father. Things have changed greatly in the past years and I would think your husband already has it bothering him, he doesn't need it bothering you. My grandmother died when she was 53 my mom is 55 she is so stressed about it which isn't good for anybody.

We would NEVER laugh at you!
I worry about losing Patrick at a young age due to the nature of his job, and discussed the freezing possibility with him when we first got married. He didn't exactly say no, but he reassured me that nothing was going to happen to him... yadda yadda.
I can understand your reasons for worrying, but I bet you will NEVER have to cross that bridge.

I have thought about it as well. With DH being a cop and the way things are today, you just never know what can happen. I could not imagine ever being with someone else or ever wanting to, but I would love to be able to have his children. I love his family and know they would be very supportive. Up to this point I have only thought about it and never acted on it at all. Maybe I should.
We are TTC right now, so hopefully we will be blessed soon

Re: Would you freeze your DH's sperm?
I dunno. Im going to play it by ear first.
DH and I want kids. (two although Im good with just one) I have had a brush with cancer in the past that I was told reduced my chances by 20%.
Still I believe in modern medicine and my man's little soldiers. We're 28 & 30 and wont start to TTC until Im nearly 30. By then if we see an issue that my OBGYN or nature can't resolve then we'll force the issue for now, Im just going to try to live life to it's fullest.
As far as dying early. His uncle who was very close to him died VERY early in our opinion. He got sick and married his girlfriend quietly and immediately afterwards got worse. He was dead in months. Poor woman. All of my aunts and female relatives on my father's side have died of Cancer. All of my father's side's men have died of a heart condition and or died on dialsys (spelling?). My mother's side? Who freaking knows?
The point is, we are who we are, we can't change it. We can die of some inhereited disease in 15 years or of a car accident tomorrow. It's nearly pointless to try to figure out how much time we have left. Preparing and thinking ahead is always good, but don't forget to live today.
My all time favorite saying is 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans'.
*hugs*

I don't know that I would want to have a child with my husband, but not ahve him be there. The thought of being without scares me though, so maybe having his child would make life more livable. NOt rteally sure though.
Michelle...I have thought about that....but seeing my MIL with her 2 sons...they are her life...and she loves to point out similarities btw them and their father...
this whole thread started b/c of 8 simple rules...I have been very emotional...maybe PMS?

Thought about it, IMO I think nothing is wrong with it. Wasn't there some story about a woman not being able to use her husband's frozen sperm?? What are the rules??
