So awhile back I wrote to Dr. Phil about my in-laws (In case you didn't know, I have nightmare in-laws, and FH would agree with this), and had gotten to the last steps to be on the show, but then I couldn;'t make the taping dates because of school obligations. I saw the topic come up again and I sent my stuff in again..now again they want to go through the process again, they want me to answer all of these questions and send pictures, etc. I;d like to fix things with my in-laws, but I don't know if I feel like rehashing everything on TV especially since I don't even know what they're going to come out with. They're notorious liars and they twist EVERYTHING (quick example, they were using bigoted language, and I said I didn;t appreciate it, they asked me why I cared since I wasn;t part of the group they were talking about, and after a lot of prodding I told them that if I were in a room and they weren;t there and someoen were using bigoted language to refer to their ethnic group, I would say something in that case as well, even though I'm not part of the group..I thought that would be language they could understand, since obviosuly principle evades them, but their version of the story is that I called them all K***s)...and I mean I did immature things, when I was younger (FH and I have been dating since we were 16), not that they were even unjuistified, so I just don't know what they're going to come out with. SO for one, I don't klnow if Im just emotionally up to rehashing everyhting and 2, I have no idea what they'd come out with on national TV....but on the other hand, nothing else seems to be working at all, and maybe we need some kind of push to get things on the right path. What would you do?

Re: Would you go on the Dr. Phil show?
i would never air my diry laundry to tv. why not just go to a regular therapist? 40 minutes of counseling by dr phil is not going to fix years and years of problems.

marymoon, do you want the whole world to know your personal business?
i think that your future as part of their family is worth more than the possible embarassment and alienation that going on national tv might cause...

Yeah I'm not going to do it. it's weird..last fall it seemed like such a great idea..and even everyone on LIW was saying I should go...but now it really seems like a bad idea...but I just felt I had to consider it and I felt divided because, as I said, last fall it seemed like a great idea.

Good choice. Shoot I even hesitate to put somethings HERE and this is not national TV! I hope you are able to resolve the issues with your FILS soon. You deserve happiness without stress.

I agree with this. Posting on here is hard enough (and I really don't do it). I could never do National TV.
Good luck!

Personally, I dont care for Dr. Phil. I am a therapist and I just done care for his style of counseling. I dont think that airing our your dirty laundry on national TV would help the problem at all. I would suggest going to a therapist in your area and working it out. I dont know how eager your FIL's would be to do that, but it s worth a shot

I don't like Dr. Phil at all. I think he makes no sense. Half the time I think he is just rambling off big words to make himself sound good.
Sorry to all the Dr. Phil fans!! I love Oprah though!
To your question, I wouldn't do it. Go to a therapist at home.

Re: Would you go on the Dr. Phil show?
Good choice not going...like you said, they're liars and who knows what they'll make up. Regardless of what you did when you were young and immature, you are going to be a part of their family very soon, and something's gotta give. You are doing the right thing by wanting to work things out now, and that shows how mature you've become. I think you should all go to a counselor or therapist. if the in-laws agree. This person will be able to look at both sides of the story without being biased, and will be able to control the conversation so it doesn't become a screaming match. As for their bigoted language, unfortunatly that's something you can't change, but maybe if it get's explained to them once again in the controlled environment of a therapists office, they will stop speaking like that infront of you out of respect for you. Good luck and Ihope you guys can work it out!

Re: Would you go on the Dr. Phil show?
I was on the Dr. Phil show, but I was shown within a group. Afterwards, I was happy that I was barely seen on TV. I think it's very embarassing. You're smart for thinking twice.
Although, I have to say, I received an extraordinary gift basket in the mail a month later. I was quite happy.
