To upstate NY? Only 2 1/2 hours from here. I am thinking of moving. If you could have a beautiful house built the way you want and your family and FH immediate family would move to.
It is just so expensive and crowded on LI. I would love to have a huge house, that you could actually afford. Also it would be possible to be home with your kids, of course when you have them (Thanks to us going to invest in real estate).
Who would never leave LI, even if it meant you were working your butts off to live here, and have just and okay house.

Re: Would you move??
I would move in a heart beat- if i got a good job. Especially if the families would follow- then it would be a pretty easy decision for me.
but i'm also very anti- LI housing prices, and think theyre just way out of control, and you dont get NEARLY what you pay for.
but my only issue would be job security- but if you have that lined up, theni would definitely take advatange of the opportunity

Re: Would you move??
First, congrats on being awake - it's lonely at this time...LOL
Second, hell yeah I would move! Seriously, who wants to work 4 jobs (2 each) to live in an OK house and have a super long commute. I say go for it...plus the families will follow so you won't be alone!
Neenie, what do you say?
ETA: LMAO! Neenie beat me to it!

Jobs would not be a problem at all. Would I miss LI?

If jobs won't be a problem - GO! Would you miss LI? Maybe, but you can always visit!
ETA: Yeah, all of neenie's points are valid. I am VERY impulsive...hence my GO!

Re: Would you move??
Its hard to say... you never know unless you take the chance though
what would you miss? how important are those things to you? what are the benefits to moving upstate? will those compensate for what youre leaving behind?
theres a ton o things to take into account, and then theres the idea of just acting on your gut, and taking the chance.

Re: Would you move??
Were considering it. My DH cant leave his job in Brooklyn though, so we cant go too far up.
My concern is not a job, but my so was raised with so much family around and I think it was great. I would hate to move that far away from family where Id have to make a real effort to see anyone. Right now I just drive 10 minutes.

I would with no hesitation. LI is way overpriced. That is enough of a reason for me. We've actually been thinking of places out of state but trying not to end up going too far. Like you said, its only 2 1/2 hours away to come visit.

When we went to Hyde Park last weekend, we looked at some real estate. Next summer, we are going to both look for jobs up there and see what happens!

Re: Would you move??
If I could get a great job lined up-- I would leave NY in a heartbeat... We were very seriously considering moving to Atlanta-- then I got a new job out of the blue here-- an oppotunity came up and it worked out.. So, we just bought a place in Hoboken-- but I know that for our apt-- we could have a very nice large house elsewhere..
I say go for it-

I would move if my immediate family moved too. In a heartbeat! I live in Queens and am going to be moving to LI most likely, but would move out of NYC in an instant. I personally like NJ but everyone else isn't ready to go yet.

Re: Would you move??
I LOVE Upstate! We actually brought property up there to retire. I also have a friend who lives up there and commutes to the city to work because he won't live any where else.

Re: Would you move??
FH and I actually did move (to Michigan), but our families (well really mine since FH's family stinks) stayed on LI and I miss them terribly. We are looking to move back east right after the wedding.
If my family would follow us, then I would move in a heartbeat!

Re: Would you move??
We've actually been discussing this. My FH's best friend moved up to Orange County and now FH loves it up there and wants to move. I'm not too sure though.

Re: Would you move??
I'm a born and raised upstater...it takes exactly 2 1/2 hours to get to where I'm originally from... I loved growing up..up there, but wanted a change. Housing prices are a lot cheaper up there..taxes too. My parents house is beautiful...they built it themselves. We have 3.5 acres of land and it's assessed for $175k. I get sick when I hear what house go for down here. Especially knowing what I've got upstate. Now...with that said...depending upon what area you're looking at you need to take into consideration a few things...weather...winters are bitches up there! (but at least they know how to plow roads! hehehe...) I used to live in Columbia County-Farm Country! Apples and Cows are our specialty. In order for me to have a half way decent job I had to commute to Poughkeepsie or Albany, which you were looking at a 45 min drive or 40 miles +. Think of doing 40+miles in the snow. Then most importantly think of schools. I went to a school that was a 'Class D' school. K-12 in one building. My Graduating Class was HUGE...50. The biggest that school had seen in years. Oh and grocery shopping...no wonder I was so much thinner up there...it would be an entire day trip to go to the grocery store. Don't get me wrong...I love it up there and would never wish I grew up any differently, but there are a lot of things to think about besides housing prices. Heck...we may just become neighbors someday should we decide to move back up there....
