To upstate NY? Only 2 1/2 hours from here. I am thinking of moving. If you could have a beautiful house built the way you want and your family and FH immediate family would move to.
It is just so expensive and crowded on LI. I would love to have a huge house, that you could actually afford. Also it would be possible to be home with your kids, of course when you have them (Thanks to us going to invest in real estate).
Who would never leave LI, even if it meant you were working your butts off to live here, and have just and okay house.

Re: Would you move??
I grew up on LI but have been upstate in Albany since college. FI and I both went to college at SUNY albany and stayed on for grad school. we have an awesome apartment about 15 minutes north of albany close to saratoga springs. we love it and would love to buy a house up here.. you can get a lot more for your money and there are a lot of places that arent too different than long island. definitely worth looking into.

if FH and I could find good jobs, definitely! I love Rockland County! it is so beautiful, quaint and charming!
A lot of Upstate is like that. I would hate the winters though
Sorry....I just had to giggle at this. We live in Rockland County, and yes, I love it----but it's far from quaint and charming (Charleston, SC is quaint and charming!!! ) ---once you get to kow the people here, it's NYC style, pace, and way of life tucked into the suburbs. The cost of homes around here is exactly the same as LI. For $300K, you would be extremely lucky to get a two bedroom shack on a tiny lot---AND it would need a LOT of fixing up. The minimum amount for a decent (not nice.....decent) 3 bedroom, 2 bath house in Rockland is $425K right now---with NO property. And I find it so funny how everybody in NYC and LI thinks Rockland County is 'upstate' NY. I grew up in Sullivan County and lived in Binghamton and Syracuse----THOSE are upstate!!! Totally different attitude and mentality in those areas------here in Rockland it's all NYC attitude and pace. And the winters aren't bad at all...we do get some snow, but not a whole heck of a lot. Although winters in Syracuse and Binghamton are horrendous!!!! I can vouch for that!! I would definitely recommend Rockland for raising a family......but the cost of living is just as bad as LI.

We did move. To Philly. We didn't even look back. We are renting an entire house for the cost of what it is to rent a studio on LI. Go for it... we miss friends and family, but we know that we have a better life here and we have so much more than we ever could have gotten on LI.

Re: Would you move??
sorry for peaking on your board but we are also looking at moving upstate or somewhere in the northeast....how the hell are we supposed to buy a house for 1/2 million on long island? its not even that nice! Crime is so much lower in other areas and its so much less crowded, less traffic ect...I would do it! Tell me if you find anything interesting, and again sorry for sneaking on your board!

Sadly, 400,000 is cheap! MEDIAN house price in Suffolk is that and in Nassau, median house price is 500,000 ~ scary!

Seriously...I miss restaurants that are open until at least 10. I miss the subway and the museums and the parks.
I know I should be grateful that I live in a beautiful town but it is like living in Mayberry. We even have a town square and all! The town just had its second annual TOMATO Festival!!!!
I miss Itialian Festas and Zeppoli's that are bigger than a chicken nugget and fluffy like they are supposed to be.
I miss pizzaria's who make Sicilian's on more than one night a week!

i definately understand what you guys are saying, BUT... being downstate isnt all that wonderful either. i dont go to museums- dont have the time, and its Alot of $$$ when you take into account the LIRR costs, admission 'donation', lunch in the city, etc... Parks? theyre everywhere... i never go to them either. Zeppoles... Yeah... i miss them ALOT and i live on LI... but IMO LI zepolis have NOTHING on brooklyn zeppoles, so theyre not even worth it to get them Seriously, being near the city has some great perks, but if all youre doing is working you azz off to be able to get by, and you cant even take advantage of all that it has to offer- then whats the point

Well said, neenie. We are working out butts off and most people I know who bought houses cannot afford to go the city or even out to eat. You kill yourself here just to get by!
