Would you order your gown without trying it on?

Original post by leslie ann

Hey Ladies!

I am in love with an Alvina Valenta gown from her 2005 collection and have finally confirmed that the designer no longer carries the sample (they usually sell it a year after the season is over). I still continue to see the dress in recent wedding photos which leads me to believe that brides actually order the dress without trying it on!

As a sidenote, I have to say that I’ve tried on quite a number of similarly designed dresses that all look awesome but this one just won’t get out of my head (and heart!). I know that in the end, whatever dress I choose that isn’t this one will still look good but I don’t know what to do!

What would you do? Would you let it go or bite the bullet and order without trying it on?

Unless, you can try on a very very similar dress, maybe by the same designer I would say no. I've tried on so many dresses that I loved in pictures and online that I didnt like when I tried them on. It seems like an expensive risk. Good luck!

I wouldn't order a gown without trying it on because you have no idea if its really going to flatter you I mean come on these are professional models...

Definitely go for it if that's what you have your heart set on. See if you can find it from either previous brides or Ebay who have worn it for their wedding for a slashed price tag. Or you can have it custom made replicating the dress by a tailor/dress designer. The same situation happened for my wedding. I had my heart set on a Eve of Milady strapless ballgown with gold embroidery. I couldn't see myself splurging close to 3K for the gown. So, I got a tailor to replicate the dress. Not only did I get the dress I wanted for my wedding but I didn't have to spend the big price tag.

I would never order a gown w/out trying it on. In my experience, everything looked completely different on me than it did in pics

I would not order a dress with out trying it on. You never know and once you order it that is it, you own it.

Re: Would you order your gown without trying it on?

Normally, for such a thing as my wedding dress I would say 'No'...

But I did it...

I am not really a fan of the traditional wedding gown. So when I found this dress I knew it was perfect and that I wasn't going to find anything I liked as much. And living overseas, I knew there was a possibility it may not be available when I return next year...so I went for it. I got professionally measured and ordered up in size.

I am still waiting for it to arrive, so I don't know yet if it was a good decision. However, for $350 I thought it was cheap enough to buy sight unseen. I figure if anything I can sell it on Ebay without much of a loss. My same dress is listed on there now for $500.

I don't know if you would want to take that risk with an expensive dress...but for a little bit of a loss, you can always sell it brand new on preownedweddingdresses or ebay. There are a lot of brides who want to snatch up dresses that are no longer available.

If it is the one you love and you can't seem to find anything else....why not take a chance?

Re: Would you order your gown without trying it on?

Aww thanks guys for the advice. My solution to this problem is procrastinate lol.

It is really scary. I'm planning to attend one of Alvina Valenta's trunk shows to see how it works out. She has a dress very similar to the one from 2005 in her latest line so we'll seeee.

I'm not really worried about the dress looking awful or anything. Every single mermaid/trumpet dress that I've tried on looks awesome which, therefore, makes the decision even harder and more confusing!

I'm not sure if every girl has that moment where she cries when she puts on her dress. I don't think I'll ever be that girl but it would be nice to get a gut feeling that a dress is THE ONE. I guess this is why my mind continues to drift to that Alvina Valenta... sigh. I will continue stalking recent brides with the dress for now until the saleswoman starts screaming at me, demanding a decision.

I honestly don't think I would. Like others have said it may look great in the magazine but you may not like it as much on you. Trust me! I had picked a few prior in magazines before I went Dress Shopping. And I was positive I would want one of the three. Turns out I purchased none of the above, I went with something totally different!
All in all though, I've always been one to say go with your heart!
(Sorry if my response confused you even more! LOL)
Good Luck Hun!

I wouldnt. There were a few dresses I thought I loved in Pics and hated them on me. It may look totally different on you.

I woudn't order it either, I think dresses can look great in pictures but when you try it on, it may not look flattering on your body.

I'm actually considering renting my bridal gown. Doesnt make sense to pay for a dress I plan to wear only 1 day and then store in a closet for years afterward.

i personally would not... i am not a person that likes to order much online anyway so i def would not feel comfortable ordering my dress online without trying it on.... JMO
