I just feel so screwed either way. We rent from Fh's dad so we pay very little and have tons and tons of space but still I want to own. I dont know if it's better to save for a house so we only have to buy once or buy a co-op now and then trade up later.

for me -- live in a very large apartment with relatively cheap rent and save money
I would rather save for a condo or house (as opposed to buying a coop)- i think of it as a better investment but it depends where you are in life.

Space wise - no. I just feel like I have a good enough job that I should own something. I think it's because I'm coming off of a North Carolina high from visiting my sister and I want something to really call my OWN. Problem is $300,000 there buys you a five bedroom house and here it buys you a 2 bedroom co-op.

Re: Would you rather
I like renting for now, because until we get enough funds together for a down payment we don't really have any other options and plus all the repairs, headaches, yardwork and all that yucky stuff are already taken care of for u!! So I am grateful that we are renting for now!

rent the apt.. then save and buy a house/condo... co-ops are a pain to buy and sell.. IMO

Honestly, I dont even know the difference between the two except that condos seem RIDICULOUSLY priced around here.
Gina, how's the apartment hunt going? The apartment I told you about on my parents' block went for $600 a month If my mom told me that WE would have moved there.

Rent cheap to buy a house after wedding. I've got my condo, but I still wish I'd waited until I got married to buy (I bought JUST before I met the FH!!!)

Re: Would you rather
it depends do you eventually want to own a House or co-op. I would do the cheap rent and save money. until I found the house I want. Sometimes getting out of a co-op can be a hassle.

I agree!!!!! This is what I want to do with the place I am living in now. Im hoping the landlords let me stay here with FH and my son and my mom will move in with my sister. We can stay and save and my son can finish out HS in his school now. I pray!!!
