Would you take a pay cut, and how much?

Would you take a pay cut, and how much?

I feel like I'm ready for a career change...I do pretty well for myself, but this field just isn't for me anymore. A friend of mine can get me a job in her company which is laid back, 9-5, gets summer Friday's...but the thing is, I'd have to take a pay cut. The area is the same, close to home like my present job. I'd have to take about a $6,000 pay cut. Would you do it?

I took an over $20000 pay cut to stop working on Wall Street. I think it was worth it to me, but so long as I had enough to live I was fine with the cut...

ETA: I would totally do it for $6000, so long as you have benefits there and everything.

I took a pay cut to get out of my last job, money got a little tight but it was the best thing I have ever done.

I think a pay cut is only a temporary set back. If you go do something you really like, it will make all of the difference in your work and you will make up that money very quickly.

Thanks guys. I feel like I don't have it bad here...in fact I have it pretty good here...but I'm just sick of the type of work (divorce) and need a change. It would be taking a step back 'position' wise, but I don't need a title to make me feel good about myself. I know my parents would flip (I know, who cares), but FH says go for it. I'm so torn. I think I'd be happier mentally.

Eh, I still am not up to what I was making on Wall Street 5 years ago at 21. But, that's ok, I knew it would take me a while in the field where I am now. Just figure out if you can live on $6000 less.

depends on what you are starting with....If I lost 6K,,,I'll be way-low-does-not have-a-value-lower class.

The question always is, could you survive on it. You want to be happy.....but you need to eat have support a roof over your head too.

We could definitely survive on it. I'd probably risk getting a huge bump here in pay in a year or so...but does it really matter? We are moving into my parent's basement to save for a house in 2 months, after the wedding, so now would be the best time to do it.

I absolutely wouldn't ever make what I'd be making if I stayed at any time. BUT...I fell into the accounting field and it just s*cks!

Depends how miserable I was at the job. If I was very unhappy, yes I would take a $6000 paycut. If I just thought that I had 'grass is greener on the other side' syndrome - then no, I wouldn't take the cut. I'm not saying you have that syndrome, I just know that I've had it before and it wasn't a good enough reason for me to take the cut.

i would definitely do it if i could afford it. have a job that makes you happy is way more important than money and titles. good luck!

Yes I would. You have to do what makes you happy...if you are spending 40+ hours a week somewhere you should be happy. The only way I wouldn't is, for example, if I had kids and it would negatively affect them.

I'm not miserable, but I am a little unhappy more each day and more bitter if anything. I am very underpaid (not for my age) but for my title here...and they screwed me this year at my review and I felt very insulted. At this point, if I got another offer and they matched it...I still feel like I need to just move on...

I did and I would again. Money is not the end all! There is a real difference about being happy in a job and miserable and you can't put a price tag on it.

Thanks guys, you made me feel so much better. I feel as though since I work/live on LI, I shouldn't leave one situation for less money, BUT I just don't love the field I'm in. I fell into a good situation here...but the work is just not motivating me.

I wish I could just be a truck driver like FH and be done with my deliveries at the end of the day and not think twice about it!

Go for it. I'm glad I did.

That the type of job I want! I dont'drive well, but a be doena tthe end of the day job.. .

DH considreed a pay cut to switch fields. Just hypothetically. He went to school to for teh new field, so we new he'd have to make the jump at some point, and whielt eh new feild ahs more potential, he was pretty much startin gover, so we came up with a # we were comfortable with. Fortunately, when he did get an offer, he didn't have to take a cut at all.

My DH HATES accounting too. He's been so unhappy lately that he almost quit to sell cars, but I really didn't feel comfortable knowing we wouldn't be able to pay the mortgage if he didn't sell enough cars one week (it was mostly commission based). Anyway, he registered to take come county tests for jobs, and hopefully will be out of there soon.

Why are strangers so much more supportive than actual friends?

Thanks again. I will try to schedule an interview to see. I just don't feel like one of those 'career' people that needs a high paying, stressful job to make me feel important.

Does anyone really LIKE accounting?

I consider myself a financial analyst and HATE when my bosses introduce me to the client as 'the accountant'. HATE HATE HATE. As far as accounting goes...this job is literally the best it will get - and I still feel the need for a change of work. Also, once your bosses jerk you around, you become a lot less motivated as well - which is what happened to me.

Your DH should DEFINITELY look around. I'd be nervous about the sales position too though.
