Would you take a pay cut, and how much?

Original post by goingtobemrs

I feel like I'm ready for a career change...I do pretty well for myself, but this field just isn't for me anymore. A friend of mine can get me a job in her company which is laid back, 9-5, gets summer Friday's...but the thing is, I'd have to take a pay cut. The area is the same, close to home like my present job. I'd have to take about a $6,000 pay cut. Would you do it?

My DH HATES accounting too. He's been so unhappy lately that he almost quit to sell cars, but I really didn't feel comfortable knowing we wouldn't be able to pay the mortgage if he didn't sell enough cars one week (it was mostly commission based). Anyway, he registered to take come county tests for jobs, and hopefully will be out of there soon.

Does anyone really LIKE accounting?

I consider myself a financial analyst and HATE when my bosses introduce me to the client as 'the accountant'. HATE HATE HATE. As far as accounting goes...this job is literally the best it will get - and I still feel the need for a change of work. Also, once your bosses jerk you around, you become a lot less motivated as well - which is what happened to me.

Your DH should DEFINITELY look around. I'd be nervous about the sales position too though.

That's the thing, I totally understand it, because I would kill myself if I was crunching numbers all day. But, I also needed to know that when he does change jobs we won't lose our home if we can't pay the mortgage... I want to be supportive, but also rational and say as much as I understand how unhappy you are, we need at least x amount to live where we are living...

There are SO many other jobs out there. Your DH will find one. That's the tough part, doing it AFTER you have a mortgage. FH said, now is the time for me to make the change, we are getting married in less than 2 months...and will be in a situation to save as much as we want living with my parents...

It's so true. I would definitely make a change now because I know how hard it is for him knowing he is starting entry-level in a new field but has a relatively high salary requirement he must meet for us to pay the mortgage. In the meantime, it is horrible seeing him so depressed about work all the time.

It is definitely more important (so long as you can afford your mortgage) to be happy at your job. I learned that. I'm just nervous about moving down the ladder and the paycut. BUt, life is about making changes and taking chances!

I would take it if there was a guaranty of a raise and bonus the next time the company dishes them out.

I would take a cut of $10k if it meant I could come back to Long Island. But...I'd be looking at more of a paycut of $25k and I can't swing that so I'm stuck in NYC.

If you are not happy, then it is worth it.

I was working as an executive asst. & I took a $16,000 paycut to teach in a Catholic School, BUT, it was the best decision I ever made.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for a public school job now that I completed my masters, but if that doesn't happen...back to catholic school next year.

Do what YOU KNOW is best....

Money is never worth being unhappy. I had a career before I decided to go into teaching where I would be making far more than teaching, but I just love what I am doing now and that makes me happy.
