wow. that was ridiculous.

um ok i just got a call from a woman who was speaking spanish and asked for my dad. so in my pathetic italian/spanish/english i asked her what she wanted. . . she apologized that she didnt speak english. So, I put my mom on the phone to talk to her - my mom spoke to her in spanish and then hung up.

get this. . . .

it was a TELEMARKETER

a TELEMARKETER CALLED MY HOUSE AND DID NOT SPEAK ENGLISH.

WHAT THE EFF?

ok i am sorry that really annoyed me.

wow.. that is sad!!!!!!

i think its great and all to have bilingual people since there are people here that dont speak (even though I personalyl think they should have to learn.. but whatever...) but to not even be able to speak english and is trying to sell something.. thats stupid!

well i think that is great that they learned.. i dont mind if they have heavy accents... that s understandable.. but they can communicate - even if it may be hard to understand them!!!

Intentional or not, this thread is offensive.

Just my opinion, I speak English, don't even have an accent, but I respect the fact that we live in a country where there is NO official language, where we have the freedom to do as we please, speak as we please, work where we please - and by we I mean everyone.

Don't take this as me being b*tchy, just pointing out that sometimes we say things and don't realize how they come across, especially on the computer.

im not offended by your opinion.. but coming from a perspective as a teacher.. who teaches children who dont speak english.. the children whose parents dont learn to speak english are at an EXTREME disadvantage... the children i have that their parents are learning.. they excell at a much faster rate

I could be wrong on this.. but if i went to another country (non touristy section) i woul dhave to learn their language? i dont think they are going to make accomdations for me

Nobody is saying they can't work but if youre going to be a telemarketer in the USA then you might want to speak english, i dont even care if its broken english but not to speak a word...If i went to another country and didn't speak a word of their language i wouldn't get a job as a telemarketer and call their houses...and also in other countries they look at you badly if you dont speak their language and get offended.

Nobody here was offending anybody and not speaking english. They don't want to learn then that is fine. Again i am sorry but you know what my parents had NOOOOOOOo choice but to have to learn the language. My parents came here with $10 in their pockets, my dad had to do a bunch of odd jobs just to help support his family and guess what those are the only jobs he got bc he couldn't really speak english then and my mom didn't speak a word of english so until i was about 3-4 years old she stayed home with me because they speak a foreign language that is not popular and that is unacceptable to everyone else, unless its a popular foreign language youre looked down upon. So you know what my parents werent able to do as they please in this country, if they didn't learn the language they wouldn't work PERIOD!!!!!!!!!! so no its not true bc this only applies to people who speak a common foreign language, everyone else is screwed and wouldn't even be considered for a job.

sorry i do get defensive about this bc its all about everyone given the same freedoms but its not true. It only applies to a few foreign countries and thats it. My parents and family were not given the same choices as other people who came to this country

Thank you, i am very proud of my parents and can't even imagine how hard it was. To leave everything behind with basically nothing and start a new life in a new country. Everything my parents have they had to work hard for and started from scratch and they were at a big disadvantage.

I second that! My grandfather came here when he was 15 years old, speaking absolutely no money, and worked any job he could get so that he could send money back to his family in his original country. I look up to him so much and admire everything he accomplished in his lifetime. He worked harder than anyone i know and made something of himself in a strage country.
