WOMEN IN SEX-SLAVE DUNGEON HORROR

By BILL SANDERSON
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

April 11, 2003 --
A creepy kidnapper straight out of 'The Silence of the Lambs' abducted at least two upstate women and chained them for months in a cold, dank basement dungeon where he repeatedly raped them, investigators said yesterday.

'I had to have sex with him every day. He said that was part of the ritual,' one of John T. Jamelske's alleged victims told The Post-Standard of Syracuse.

When the woman fought Jamelske, he retaliated by burning her with a cigar, she said. She still has the burn scars on her back.

She banged and yelled in hope someone would hear her. 'I screamed and I pounded until my hands were raw,' she recalled.

The woman's May 2001 abduction off a Syracuse street stymied cops until this week, when Jamelske, 67, was caught with 16-year-old girl he'd allegedly held since October - and who told cops she too was chained for months in the basement dungeon.

The first victim, a 28-year-old mother of two, told Post-Standard reporter Jim Reilly she would have killed Jamelske - except that she didn't know the combinations to the dungeon's locks.

'The only reason I didn't kill him is because I knew I wouldn't be able to get out,' she said.

She said she heard other screams in the basement, and wonders if Jamelske had other women locked away.

Jamelske freed her after eight weeks by dropping her off, her eyes hooded, in front of her mother's house. 'I never told him where my mother lived,' the woman said.

Jamelske, of DeWitt, a Syracuse suburb, is being held without bail on charges of kidnapping, rape, sexual abuse and sodomy.

His dungeon - built off the basement of his house - sounds like the grimy cellar in the 1991 movie 'Silence of the Lambs' where FBI agent Clarice Starling finds a woman.

It's three feet below Jamelske's lawn and is reached through a crawl space and several steel doors. It has at least two chambers, Syracuse TV station WTSM reported.

Pictures of several women chained to a wall were found elsewhere in Jamelske's house, cops said.

One photo was of the 28-year-old woman - who this week picked Jamelske out of a lineup.

Now police are combing missing-person reports seeking other victims.

Jamelske was busted Tuesday after his teen victim - who'd recently begun traveling with him outside his house - sneaked a phone call from a bottle-recycling business to her sister, The Post-Standard said.

When the sister asked whom she was with, the victim answered:

'He's a rapist.'

The teen's sister called her fiancé, who used caller ID to figure out from where the teen was phoning.

The sister then called the bottle business and asked a worker to get the plate number of Jamelske's car. Cops used it to track him down.

Jamelske kidnapped the teen in October after he offered her a ride, cops said.

For four months, the 16-year-old was chained to a wall in the bunker.

Recently, Jamelske began letting her travel with him outside, police said.

The teen was never reported missing because she often ran away from home, said police.

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh said the teen victim might have waited to seek help because she was psychologically dependent on her abductor.

Jamelske's son Paul told the newspaper his father is 'very quirky' - but added that they're not close.
