so... in the fall we got a 'Save the Date' from Dhs second cousin (bride) out in western PA... the wedding is july 7th. so, since its getting close now, i've been waiting for the invite. WELL we're talking to DHs mom last night and it turns out that the grooms mom has more people she wanted to invite, so they're not inviting a bunch of people from the brides side now makes sense, but AFTER you sent out STDs and we were counting on being invited?? THEN, dhs mom shows us the invite- they sent out registry cards with the invites, AND theres a 4 hour time gap between the ceremony and reception. now i know that somtimes can't be avoided, but the ceremony is at a park, not a church, so they probably could have picked any time they wanted to for the ceremony... AND the invite had cinderella on it and said ' please join us for an enchanted evening'- LOL like its the high school prom or something... lol just so funny how stuff works outside of the NY area...

I think the only really 'bad' thing is that they sent the STD's to you and now you're not being invited. The other things (cinderella theme for example) may not be my idea of what I want for my wedding, but it's the bride and groom's day so whatever floats their boat. For the time gap, they may not have had an option - a park has rules and regulations too. Even if they did choose the gap, they may have had a good reason - special photos time for example, so that they could enjoy the cocktail hour and reception with family and friends instead of taking pics.
Not trying to down your post, but just showing you the other side.

Re: wow! weddings ARE different everywhere else!
It was very rude to send out STDs and not invite everyone who received one. However, bad etiquette spans all geographic regions.
The other things aren't my taste or things I'd do at my wedding, but are pretty common all over. (And just be careful b/c there are some brides on here who have had or are having a Cinderella theme for their wedding).
The time difference could be for countless reasons - It's annoying, but perhaps someone is having people back to their house for drinks in between or something. I've had time gaps that big around here, too.

lol You want to talk about different... in some small towns in Germany, its considered normal to make people pay for their dinner at a wedding. I guess a gift isn't inspected in that case, but I still find it strange And everythign else is pretty different too... like its not legal to get married by the church...you need a civil ceremony in order for it to be legal. They play weird games like kidnapping the bride and making the groom find her or something (I think there is money involved). But yea, weddings are definately different wherever you go.

traditions are diff all over the globe
in Italy, it's normal for weddings to be held any day of the week... and guest attire is casual... there are no bridal parties, just a BM and MOH. weddings there are alot less formal than here.

Yea thats another difference... its never more than like $50 pp (probably more likt $20) just for the food...and there is almost no such thing as open bar and you get charged per drink ordered..so usually guests are limited to wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks.

i can't believe they put registry info in their invites!!!! my mom said she saw that once, and thought it was sooo tacky - aren't those supposed to be in the shower invites? although i guess if you got a STD but now an invite you might not have been invited to the shower lol...

thats weird they sent and STD and not an invitation. Thats just plain rude. Not that this is right, but if they were not sure if they could invite you, they shouldn't have sent and STD and thn just sent an invite if they were able to invite you. Still a lil rude, but not as rude or noticable.
