WR - venting about guest

Original post by pigs222seal

I just need to vent. I invited a family friend (her name is Mary) to our wedding. She is single, but invited her and a guest. She told me she was coming alone. My younger sister (Nancy) who is 16, I invited without a guest. My FH and I decided not to send invites with a guest to whom ever is younger than 18 years of age. Well, I just received an e-mail from my step-mother, saying Mary is going to bring Jay. Jay is Nancy’s boyfriend. How rude?? First of all, if Nancy wanted to bring her boyfriend, she should have asked me….not play the system. I am so piss** off right now.

I am not sure what to do, because technically I did give the option to Mary to bring a guest…..but if I wanted Jay to be there I would have told my sister. Also, today these weddings are not cheap and I didn’t expect to make money, but do you really think these 16 year olds are going to cover there plates at $170 each…I don’t think so!!

What did Nancy say? She must be pi$$ed!!!!

I didn't talk to her yet, she is still at school.

Beside our rule 'no guests with under 18,' there are other reasons why I son't want her boyfriend at the wedding. He is a trouble maker and unfortunatly no one really likes him. I know I will be hurting my sister by not having him come, but this is not a party/bash, this is a wedidng with class. (ohh, it rhymes.)

I understand why you didn't want to invite people under 18 with guests, but your own sister? It seems as though the fact that he is a trouble maker and people don't like him is a bigger reason why you don't want him there, which is completely understandable.

Although she does have a legitimate right to be angry her bf wasn't invited, she definitely should have confronted you about it rather than go behind your back to get her way. The evil things people do to you on your wedding you'll probably never forget. I'm not speaking to 3 people anymore after the way they showed their 'support'. However, since it's your sister, it needs to be resolved. I wouldn't confront her with an angry tone though. Try to just question her about it and see what she says and how the conversation progresses from there.

Thank you for your input...but I am also going to have to speak with Mary (Family Friend)......what should I say to her?

I'd speak to Nancy first. Although unlikely, isn't it possible Mary was lied to? I'm assuming Nancy is your half sister (stepmom's and dad's daughter?) So is Mary more a 'friend' of your stepmom's or more a friend of yours?

You are good!!! Yes Nancy is my half sister and Mary is a friend of my step mother.

Why would your sister go around you like that?? I would confront your sister. That's ridiculous!

What did you say to your stepmom when she told you that arrangement?

Well she asked me and told me about the arrangements, so I said 'No, I don't want Jay at the wedding.....if I wanted him there I would have invited him or told Nancy to bring him.' She wasn't upset about it all and subject was changed. She has a big mouth and she likes to gossip, I am sure she will get to Nancy and Mary before I do and then more drama will break out and I'll have hives all over my body

FSIL did something similar....she broke up with her boyfriend and then once she heard she wasn't allowed to bring just anyone to the wedding, she got a new boyfriend that no one is allowed to meet UNTIL the wedding!!!!

Keep your cool. It isn't right, but I just wouldn't sweat it in reality. I was furious about FSIL and really wanted to say 'Hey, no way...she just met this kid and none of us know him, she can't just do that....' I picked my battles.

I completely understand that you feel upset about this whole scheme they have come up with. I also have younger sisters, under 18, and they are in pretty serious relationships. I know that it would really hurt my sisters feelings if I didn't recognize her boyfriend. I understand that it can get crazy if you invite ALL of your under 18 guests with a guest but we are talking about your sister. Hope that helps.

Ok, I would be seriously annoyed at Mary, the 38-year old. That's totally innapropriate for her to sceme with the teen-agers. Is she trying to be 'cool' or something. The more I think about it, that's so obnoxious. You couldn't not invite Mary without a guest because of her age, and then she sneaks around you to bring a 16-year old boy. tell Mary, she can bring someone her own age if she chooses, and if your sister wants to bring a date, she needs to talk to you about it.
