x post; Debt help!

Has anyone been in debt and is now out? Is anyone in the process of getting out of debt? Or is anyone in the business?? FH and I are lost and need help.

I have perfect credit. FH had some issues in the past and now we are trying to fix it. I have his credit reports, and we are trying to figure out the best action plan. We are fixing his student loans right now to get it out of default, but we dont know the best course of action for his other debts (mostly credit cards).

He hasn't been paying them so they are all in collections/default already.

I read about sending validation letters. If the collection agencies dont have proof, you dont have to pay. But i think it might be too late for us to do this because it has to be 30 days after getting the notice. We havent really gotten any notices or calls lately. We just know what he owes from the credit report.

We were thinking of taking out a loan in my name and negotiating with the agencies. This seems like the best idea. We can clear the debt and then have one loan we have to pay off. Thoughts???

I dont even know who to ask. I mentioned it at my bank once, but they weren't that helpful. I dont know which credit debt consolidation company to trust. ughhhhh can anyone help??

I was in the same position as you. My credit is A-OK but FH has some problems with school loans, medical bills, etc. First, I suggest that you pick up the Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. We read it together and it really changes your thinking about spending. It also helps you budget way better and has TONS of suggestions for helping get out of debt. He has whats called a 'debt snowball' that is really working for us! We just paid off a bunch of big payments using his method. He also says not to trust ANY debt consolidation companies. I highly recommend it and it has been so helpful for us! FM me if you have any other questions or I can help in some way

youre welcome! he also has a website that you can poke around on too, ask questions and stuff. You can also pay to be a member and get some free stuff, but I never did that. I just look at the FAQ section. HTH!

Can you talk to your accountant. DHs account has been very helpful assisiting him in getting out of debt.

There are various credit counseling services that will work with you to negotiate lower rates and such. My dad got out of debt that way a few years ago. Also, they might consolidate your payments into one, and have you pay them and they distribute the money.
