Re: How long did it take you to find a house threw a real estate agent?

I cant really answer your question but I will say that depending on the area, it could take awhile in your price range.
I would say that as along as you are prepared to put an offer on a house, should you find one, I would start now, because if it takes you two months to find one, and then closing I hear averages 2-3 months that would be right before your wedding.
Good Luck

What area are you looking in?

ETA: I say this because FI and I started looking early thinking it would take us awhile and we found a house right away. Now we arent sure we want to put an offer out yet because of timing...we didnt want to move in until May-ish....

It took us six months of looking to find a house that we liked AND get an accepted offer. We made some offers that were not accepted. Since we found the house it will be about an additional two months until we close. So 8 months total!

Jola, I can say your FI is right, mine is from Kings park and he would love to live in that area but you will find that unless you want to completely gut the house you wont find anything under 425,000 in Smithtown, plus taxes are pretty high!
We are looking in Ronkonkoma, Nesconset, Lake Grove, Holbrook, Holtsville and Coram. Coram is where we found a house we really like, but we are just not sure we want to live that far from everything (its about 40 minteus to either of our families and 20 to the train station --I work in NYC!)Good Luck with your search.

With 3 realtors, it tooks us over a year (we purchased our home over 2 years ago.) I also spent my days searching on the net and doing lots of 'drive-bys'. During that time we put 4-5 bids on homes and lost. (We were also considered a realtor's worst nightmare because we were so darn picky.) Looking back, I'm glad we lost all the previous bids because our location & property surpasses the others. Some of the homes were better looking or newer, but changing the structure of a home is a lot easier than the location.

It took us about 7 months. We got out bid every time !! I would def start now. Turns out the place we got was in much better condition than the others. I think we only got it because I practically stalked the real estate lady(we were looking in a very specific location). She called us the night before it went on the market. I think she just did it to get rid of me at that point !!

WE got lucky - just a lot of open houses, never committed to a broker, and one day we saw a for sale by owner in smithtown - saw it, put our very first bid on it (we didnt want to bid on something unless we were SURE), and within 2 weeks we went into contract having gotten it for 20K less than offering.

we looked and off for 6 months, contract to closing took 4.5 months

ALMOST 3 MONTHS OF STEAD LOOKING. IT IS TIME CONSUMING AND PATIENTS ARE THE BEST WAY TO GET THROUGH IT ALL. GREAT LUCK!
