In the past when I've gotten highlights, I've gotten my hair dyed back to my natural color with no problem. I'm just the opposite of you though. I just put highlights in my hair again about a month ago. I love the color, but I hate what it has done to my hair. It's so dry! And I really need to cut off about 2 inches for it to be really healthy, but I can't if I want it to be long enough for my wedding updo.
I think you will be fine though if you go back to your natural color.

i did that last year..(went back dark). the first time the color did change a bit after a month...id say it took two or three colorings for it to 'stick'

in the past i've had pretty subtle highlights so maybe that's why it took after just one time.

i just put my hair back to brown, because i didn't like highlights either and i had to do it twice for it to take.
