Re: Getting Married in a Greek Church?

Hi! I'm getting married in a greek church...St. Paul's. It is true...no vows! We are going to ask if we could say vows at the end. I do think you kiss though...

My FH is Greek...I'm converting early next year.

In a Greek Orthodox ceremony, you do not exchange vows, but the groom does kiss the bride.

Hi, i am also getting married in a Greek Church, I didn't realize that! But it is true, we do not exchange vows. I agree with the others though, I think we do get to kiss. Where is everyone getting their crowns from?

Just agreeing with everyone else. You do not exchange vows - but the bride and groom kiss.

The Greek Orthodox Wedding Ceremony is actually very symbolic, meaningful and beautiful

Bump!

FH and I are going to talk to the preist to see if we could say our own vows to each other once he is done performing the ceremony. I'll let you know what he says if your interested...

GO ceremonies are ususually about 45 minutes- depending on the priest.

My parents came from Greece about 35 years ago - so although they have been here for many years they are still closely tied to the greek traditions.

I dont think you are going over the top at all! FH and I are having 6 people on each side for our bridal party (my brother is having 7 each).

I know that weddings in Greece are a lot less of a deal than they are here. Greek-americans tend to go all out- but i like that - it is SUCH a special day. Definitely do what you and your FH are comfortable with.

What do your parents mean that yo are asking too much of your guests - do you mean because you are having an e-party? E-parties are SO common now. I dont think its asking too much at all.

ETA: Have you every been to a greek orthodox wedding ceremony? It might be good for you to talk to a priest. He may allow you to sit in on a wedding that he performs so that you can see how it is. My cousin married a non-greek man that is catholic. He didnt change religion but they got married in the Greek church and the priest did half the ceremony in greek and half in english. The priest says many of the blessings three times so he alternated between greek and english.

ETA: Another option of saying vows if the priest does not allow them in church is to say your vows at the reception before the koumbaro says the toast.

Re: Getting Married in a Greek Church?

wow - i am really sorry you are dealing with that - it is truly unfair. FH and I decided to pay for the wedding ourselves because we do not want to have either of our parents say anything. We want total control - of course we are going to do certain things out of respect to them - but on the most part - we are making the decisions.

Is there now way that you can get it across to your father that this person is your friend and it means a lot for him to be there?

Although I do agree that it's not fair that your father isn't allowing you to invite your friend, you also have to realize that it's probably his pleasure to pay for your wedding, and he would consider it a great insult if you do not allow him to. Most Greek fathers are very traditional and it really isn't fair to call him stubborn. He was brought up a certain way his whole life & you really can't expect a 70 year old man to change his way of thinking, whether it be right or wrong.
Good luck with all your planning and I'm sure that as the days approach your parents will overlook many things and let you plan the wedding the way you want to.
