I think it depends on the church. Some GO churches are more strict than others. For my sisters wedding we had a shawl over our shoulders. For my cousins wedding they did not.

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
I just went to a Greek Wedding in East Northport - all the girls in the church had to have covered shoulders - the bride, the maids and the guests. This girl did it very elegantly, and tied a stole over her shoulders... it looked great - then she took it off for the reception

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
It does totally depend on the church. There were no restrictions at the GO church that we had our wedding ceremony .. I was told many past brides and BMs at our church wore strapless gowns with no issues... I had a dress w/cap sleeves and so did my BMs, so for us it wasn't an issue anyway
Good Luck

My church... St. NIcholas in Flushing said the same thing( they are pretty strict)... my girls had sleeves, but my dress was spaghetti straps... I just showed up that day with the dress on and no wrap (it was a hot day in July) and no one said anything....

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
I'm pretty sure at my church the girls don't have to be covered.

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
If you ask the church office, they will probably tell you shoulders have to be covered, but if you show up with shoulders exposed, I doubt they'll say anything.

I'm getting married at St Paul's in Hemsptead, and they seem to be a little more liberal, still I have to find out. Imagine if I showed up on my wedding day and they wouldn't let any of us in the church!!
Just out of curiousity... how many of you ladies are greek marrying catholic guys, and how many are catholic marrying greek guys? I'm an irish-catholic and my FH is GO.
Funny you mention this ...
I am Italian Catholic and my DH is Greek Orthodox.. we only did the GO ceremony, but I know of some who have had ceremonies in both churches!
I've seen quite a few of these combos on these boards, but also a lot of GO brides as well

I think it depends on the church. I got married at St. Demetrios in Merrick two months ago and I wore a strapless gown and didn't cover my shoulders and no one said anything.

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
Holy Trinity in Hicksville was terrific. There were no restrictions on attire, church decorations or even rice or rose petal outside the church. I would make a call to the church without giving the names and see what they say. Good Luck.

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
My Koumbaras brother is marrying a girl who isn't Greek Orthodox, shes Catholic. They spoke to priests from both churches. The Catholic priest said that the Catholic Church will recognize a GO Ceremony, however the Greek Orthodox Priest said that they would not recognize a Catholic Ceremony.

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
You will find that there don't seem to be hard and fast rules for some things. Priestsdo vary a lot, some being more modern and flexible than others. If that's what you were told at your particular church, then that's great. As far as I know, not many Greek priests will allow a priest from another denomination to perform a sacrament. Do you mind telling me which church it is, through an FM if you prefer? Thank you.

LImom: I'm getting married in Holy Trinity. Can you tell me a little about the ceremony? Did you exchange wedding vows and did you kiss the groom? I heard mixed things about Greek ceremonies and wanted to make sure of it. We are going to have the 45 minute ceremony by Father George.

I've seen that alot on these boards and I'm so perplexed! When FH and I went to speak to a Catholic priest he assured us that our marriage would be recognized in BOTH churches regardless of whether or not a Catholic priest was at the Greek ceremony. He explained how close the two religions are and all I really needed was to let my church know I was getting married somewhere else. He said it depends upon the Greek priest if the Catholic priest will be allowed at the ceremony, but that was really the only hitch. I could even recieve communion in the Greek church if i wanted to!
Don't worry!! Everything will be fine. For those of you who are marrying into the Greek culture there's a GREAT book by Marilyn Rouvelas called A Guide to Greek Traditions and Customs in America. I am Greek and so is my husband and I found this book so informative. You can get the book here: Greek Traditions BOok

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
Wow, 2 Greeks, your wedding must have been HUGE! 95% of my family lives in Greece still, so we are going to have a small wedding compared to others. We have to incorporate Greek music, bagpipes, and regular music....should be interesting! I dropped out of Greek dancing...oh well, you won't see my legs kicking in different directions under my dress!

Re: Greek Wedding Ceremonies
Im Greek and DH is Catholic , but so not religious that it wasn't even an issue. Plus having an uncle and a cousin who are Greek priests it wasn't even an option of not having it there. We also had Greek music and bagpipes too!
My friend had ceremonies both in the Catholic and Greek church, but she couldn't tell the Greek church about the Catholic ceremony or they wouldn't have married her there. My other friend had a Catholic priest at the Greek ceremony, he basically said a simple prayer while he was there.
