Re: to be a godparent you need a letter from your church
it's essentially showing your membership to a church...shouldn't they take a baptismal/confirmation certificate???

What your sister needs from you is a letter from your church stating that you are registered there (means that you go to church and give a envelope every week).

I didn't have to get a letter from my church when I became a godparent. My DH was just godfather and he didn't have to give them a letter either.

I never heard of that. When we were christening my son the church just wanted to know what religion the God Parents were. We said Roman Catholic & that was enough for them.

Some churchs ask for one and some do not.

I think it depends on the denomination...Catholics being the strictest....I know my best friend couldn't ask me or DH to be a god parent (I'm jewish and DH is Christian...not good enough for them)

You need to find a local church in Farmingdale (look here for a list of local churches) Choose one, call the rectory and explain your situation. They will probably give you a letter if you join.

Just go to St. Kilian's and tell them you want to register, they will give you a questionare and welcome you to the church. It is right down the road from the library right by the gym.
Then you can ask them to write a letter for you.
If you have a copy of your baptismal, communion or confirmation certificate that will help them since your church is out of state.

Ditto. I am the Godmother to My DH's Nephew (my Nephew) and I am the Godmother to my Nephew I didn't need anything each time.

It depends on the Parish. I had to do this to become a Confirmation sponser. I joined the local churhc as soon as I found out, and then I aited as logn as I could, going weekly, contributing in my envelopes, then asked for the form. They don't have to know you presonally, they just look you up & the priest signs a little card.
