learning to pick your battles early on will only help you in the long run - slap some kisses in a bag to appease the old battleaxe and then belch the alphabet.

I had a similar situation..I just went to my cousin's bridal shower, which her sister(MOH) threw and it was so lovely..except for the groom's side of the family. they all showed up to this casual restaurant in dresses and jewelry and everything done up like crazy.. not like we were dressed like hobos, but just casual. i can only imagine what they will look like on the wedding

I went to a really nice engement party in a backyard that didn't have either.

It was under a tent, atered, there was sushi & a clown & cotton candy for the kids, but the tables just had that palstic heart confetti & there were no favors. I don't think engagment parties need favors & I come from a family big on favors.

I'd maybe get cheap & easy centerpiecess instead. Like the ind you'd see at a coctail hour- bud vases or votives or floating candles or something.

ETA: kisses in a bag sound easy enough.
my mom wouldn't let us do that for the wedding, but for an engagement party that should be fine.

Is she paying for this? If she offered to pay I think you should go for both the CPs and favors.
If your are paying for it I think it would be nice to give a small favor- maybe some candy or something.
JMO- If I was a guest at an engagement party with a tent I would think it was a little weird if there weren't favors.

I agree--if she wants to pay, I say OK! I have never been to an e-party so I don't know if favors are appropriate.

Hmm...I think I'd find it a little odd if there WERE favors at an e-party. They're not even required at the actual wedding! (my (Jewish) FMIL says Jewish people don't ever do favors at weddings)

Seems to me that in her quest to be classy, she's in danger of looking as if she's trying too hard.

Why do people expect a gift for coming to a party? Isn't the party enough??

Too funny!!

What about making quick Save-the-Date magnets and giving those out instead?

OMG that's how I feel exactly! I'm like 'dude, we're feeding you and your massive and intrusive family, most of whom we don't know from a whole in the wall and letting you party at my house. Now you want a gift too? How about I pretend this fun and we call it even?'

You are hilarious!

Sarcasm makes the world go 'round.

But seriously, what about token gifts for the bridal party? anyone? anyone?

That was cute...

As far as the BP gifts, I personally am not crazy about the idea because...well, how are you going to give them out without making the rest of the guests feel slighted? Are you going to pull the BP aside and hand them out?

Also, if the point of the favors was so that your FMIL could feel like she was impressing somebody, are the people in the BP the people she wants to impress?

If you want to give the BP gifts just as a thank you for coming though (not as a sorta favor to pacify the FMIL) that's fine... just make sure no one else catches wind of it.

I say no to favors, maybe to CP's - just from a decoration perspective (but something simple & easy) and no to BP gifts ...
