Re: Teachers - yet another question....

Re: Teachers - yet another question....

it all depends on the year you graduate i think.
when i graduated, i got a job quickly because there were a lot of retirements that year, so there were lots of openings.....

this past year was terrible because there was a lot of budget trouble, so a lot of districts were firing, not hiring....

it's all a matter of timing really!

good luck to all

I graduated with and elementary ed (N-6) Bachelors in 1999. I've been working in Catholic school for 5 years and I feel TRAPPED! I can't get another job on long island or the city at all!! The field is saturated with teachers. I will have my Masters in Reading this December, so hopfully that will open up a door for me. It's so tough to get a job...don't give up hope!

It was a hard year for the educators! I have a very needed degree (secondary Education in Biology) and it was very hard!! But in the end I got a job with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory!!

ETS: It was a hard year also because many of the budgets didn't pass on long island!

ok...I guess I would still have my current job. I was told I could probally finish in about 2- 2 1/2 years...Making me only about 30
So I could look, and still have current job.....I guess it's a risk in any field.

the only problem with keeping a job while getting a masters in education is that most programs require you to do a 3-4 month student teaching semester....which is full-time, so it's tough to keep a job at the same time....just so you are prepared

Jenny,

Honestly it depends on retirments, enrollments and what discipline you are going into. Foreign Language teachers, no problem, pick your district, name your demands. Elementary is much more saturated and more difficult to find a job.

Phys ed shouldn't be that bad. The only field that is virtually impossible is elementary. I graduated with a 4.0 (MS) and have teaching experience and the only interview I got was for a $14,000/yr job. I'm going back into my old field for a while bc I can't live off of that salary or the instability and low pay of a subbing job. Phys ed though, I've seen a few openings in the paper. You should be fine. Don't let anyone discourage you. Good luck.

are you phys. ed. & health? the health certification could be crucial to getting a job in a high school but not so much in an elem. school.

ETA: the city is always looking for teachers, if you're willing to teach there.

Very hard! I worked a year as a teacher aide and have been in a Catholic school ever since! Can't seem to get out-- if I had to go back I would get out of education!

Did you apply to BOCES? That's where I started out 6 years ago. I did one year then got into a district in Nassau. But, yes it is very hard. And this year in particular seems very hard for someone just entering teaching.

Re: Teachers - yet another question....

I just have to vent here. A girl I graduated from Dowling with just told me that this guy got hired in a good district and he just graduated. This guy was SO DUMB and did not give a CRAP about school. He'd never show up to class, almost FAILED the EASIEST class in the world (computers) and could barely even finish a sentence bc he was so baked. Everything started with, 'Duuuude...' WHY? WHY? I just don't get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because he's male?? Even if that's the case, WHY HIM???

Besides there being very few jobs this year, you have to know someone to get the jobs that are available. Unfortunetly like most things in this world it is all about who you know to get an interview. It took my five years to get out of the city and I finally did this year. Sad to say but I knew someone and that is how I got my initial interview with the district. Dont give up hope ladies just keep pounding the pavement. Good luck!!!

What are you looking to teach? there are many openings in Secondary Science, Foreign Language, and English Education. *this is what I hear from other Educators*

I feel phys ed is the hardest- any of teh 'special' areas like art and music too. Just think about how many phys ed. teachers there are in each school...usually 1-2 while there are 4-5 teachers for each grade level. I have been in my district and have seen teachers come and go but never the phys ed teachers!

No matter what field or area of teaching you go into- it's all about who you know and being in the right place at the right time! Even if you s*ck at what you do!

Keep at it any good luck.... you never know!
