Re: anyone have a Dachshund????

My girlfriend just got one..he is so cute..they named him Guiness. He's wild and poops and pees all over..although he is getting better. They are so small I always feel like i'm going to step on him when i go over. She takes him everywhere. He does nip (and it hurts) a lot but I dont know if that is because he is just a baby..oh and he humps everything..lol

I know Kathy116 always had Dachshound's...I believe her parents still have them. They are adorable!

I've read that Dachshunds are prone to seizures too - definitely something you'd want to look into.

As for the humping thing - it is just one of those things. My dog at 10 months is still doing it but not as much. DH's parents have a lab also and he never did......depends on the dog.

At least mine stopped doing it to people.......

SIL has one and they named him Oscar. He's a cute dog....very yippy though and ALWAYS has to be in your lap or under your feet.....a little annoying in my book, but he's a lover

I agree, very yippy..I cant have a dog that small...I would be afraid to step on it all the time...

FSIL has a mini dachshund and FH and I are always playing with it. I will try to attach a pic. It does yip a lot, sometimes relatively loudly, and it is not trained to go outside so it goes on weewee pads. It needs constant attention. She is really cute, but is always underfoot, and does nip a bit--she is constantly chewing on fingers, etc.

Re: anyone have a Dachshund????

I've had Dachshunds all my life, my parents were also breeders.

I love my doxies, but I have to be honest with you, I would look into another breed.

Every Doxie I've met are BARKERS/Yappy dogs. Not a great dog if you are in an apartment.

But the big reason why I would look into another breed is the back problems. Two of my Doxie's had to have the back surgery (which cost a few thousand for each dog, but that's fine with us, we'd do anything for them)...but one didn't survive, her back just degenerated, and the other is still around, but has a very difficult time getting around.

Their short legs and very long backs is why they have such bad backs.

If you do decide to puchase one, be sure to TAKE OUT PET INSURANCE IMMEDIATELY and make sure this back operation would be covered. You have to take out the insurance way before there's any sign of a problem, that's why it's good to just get the insurance when you first get your puppy.
However, some insurance companies won't cover this operation for doxies because they are so prone to needing this surgery, it's almost expected, or the risk you take.

Like I said, I LOVE MY DOXIES, my parents have three...but I wouldn't advise someone to buy one. They are also very territorial over their owners...and they LOVE TO DIG (which can hurt their back)
