Re: WHY is it so hard to find a good-paying job on LI?! (LONG VENT!)

I took a $30,000 pay cut to work on Long Island instead of commuting into the city (I was on Wall Street). Luckily, in the 3 years I have been where I am working I got promotions and pay increases. It is hard, and the pay is definitely less, but I have found my quality of life to be much better without that commute! Good luck. Computer Associates laid off a bunch of people lately, so I know a ton of people unemployed and looking on LI now, all willing to work for peanuts (and most with MBAs). Henry Schein hired a bunch of them--you could check there, but it wouldn't be in publishing.

I'm with you Helene. I'm trying to find something and there is NOTHING out there - unless you want to work for peanuts. I feel like everyone else gets all the breaks

Helena, you have been in publishing for a while and have probably established some contacts. Have you thought of doing freelance copyediting or proofreading? My company is ALWAYS sending manuscripts to freelancers.

Aside from that, I think there are a few magazines and newspapers on LI.

I feel your pain. I have been looking for a new job for about 2 years now. I have gone on a few interviews and a few call backs but nothing! It is very very fustrating. I have no advice.

Unfortunately, its all about who you know. That is how I lucked out. They knew me, and my work so I got the pay I wanted. The ad in the paper for new people is MUCH less that what I'm making.

Agencies! There are tons of agencies on the island...You have to send your resume to all of them...Meet with all of them...You need to make a full-time job out of looking for a job.

I'm in the industry as well, and I attempted to look on the island, and there really isn't much.

Basically you can go into newspapers (Newsday, or local papers like the Anton Newspapers) and then there are the Pennysavers and other 'saver' type magazines. There are a few 'luxury magazines' as they call them- on the island that cater to the North Shore crowd, and Hamptons crowd. I know there is one based in Woodbury.
So maybe these suggestions could lead to something??

But you will not see pay anything close to what you make in NYC (not like we make a ton to begin with) but I'd try and get my hands on some of these books and get some names off the mast head, and throw my resume and cover letter at them. Try sending it to the EIC or Publisher and keep following up.
Good luck!!
