Speed: 2.00 GHZ is sufficient for email, basic word documents, basic photo works. It can be higher (you can go up to three if you feel you need more. I am satisfied with the 2.00 GHZ). Make sure its a Pentium 4.
Memory: 256 or 512 MB of ram is sufficient. Depends on how much programs and software you want to install and utilize on your computer
Printer: depends on what you want to use it. I have been happy with the HP brand. Depending on whether you want to print photos or just docs and graphics will depend on whether you get Photosmart or Deskjet.
Make sure you get the one with the CD burner.
They have different deals on the Dell.com site and you can build the type of computer you like.
Only downside to Dell is the customer service, they outsource it to India. I dont' know if this is true for other companies too.

Re: I need a computer......HELP
I have had nothing but Gateways and I love them.
My office uses Dell and so far they have been great as well.
Memory is relatively inexpensive these days, so even if you go with the basic ones from either of these companys you should be more than fine. Should you run into a problem in the future you can always by one of those aftermarket portable USB drives.
I do suggest getting a CD burner especially if you have a digital camera. Picture files do take up a lot of space on the pc, so being able to burn them onto a CD will only help you.
As far as printers go: You cannot get better reliability than a HP, IMO.
