Do you have the kind of relationship with her that you can explain what you've said here (would like to return a once a year use item for something that can be used all year round)?

She's very old school. I have a feeling that if I told her I wanted to return it, she'd say that she was fine with it. But, then never give me anything nice again...

Do you use soup bowls at holidays a lot? If not, tell your husband and exchange them. Your MIL won't notice probably.

exchange them for the crystal and let everyone know that it was a nice gesture, but after thinking about it, you won't use them because you don't serve soup for the holidays and would get more use out of the crystal

it's still a gift from her either way

If I was in your situation, I would probably make my husband admit to his mother that he was wrong about the bowls, and while they are beautiful, they can only be used once a year (if that...I know I've NEVER had soup on Christmas) and that you have no place to safely store them.
It's worth a shot!

They can be used for pasta bowls too. If I remember correctly, you said FH family is old school Italian, which explains why she bought those bowls for you. I would keep them... only because I, personally, would use them for pasta/lasagna/baked ziti etc. for the Christmas holiday. As you may know, Italians eat in courses. The first course is always some sort of pasta, which would go in a pasta/soup bowl. If you plan on hosting Christmas and having many courses, you will def. get use of those bowls.

Maybe, she will buy the crystal for you another time.

I'm going with Winterbride. I think you should keep them b/c it sounds like it would be a factor in preserving your relationship. You can use the bowls for courses, soup, salad, pasta, etc. Rather than this be something MIL might hold against you for many Christmas' to come, I'd say to just hold onto the bowls and use them if you can. It sounds like she was quite generous with her gift to you, which is very nice and thoughtful. Maybe you can drop birthday hints for the crystal.

I think you have to cuk it up and keep the bows, especially since your Dh okayed it ahead of time. I LOVE that buffet set also and esp with the goblets, the price is so great! I think in the future as you entertain more and more you might be glad to have the bowls to serve pasta and soup!
