All I know is almost 19 years later (eek) I still remember my favorite Bat Mitzvah present was from one of my mom's friends - she gave me a Benetton bear and a gift cert to Benetton. At that age, the $$ didn't mean anything to me because it just went into an account!

Exactly! the money will go into an account --my parents deposited all the money i received from my baptism and communion and i am so grateful --i think this is a much better than giving some random gift.

thanks, was that really necessary? $200 for a communion? i think that's nuts. for a wedding maybe, but a communion? an 8 year old getting $200? seems excessive to me, but whatever....

i think you should cover your plate --i highly doubt they are paying $25/person.

My point was - don't make it a random gift - put some thought into it. I think it would be nice for him to receive some things that he can appreciate NOW.

mrswask--
He is 8 years old! what would an 8 year old appreciate??????? a toy that he will get tired of in 2 weeks? i totally disagree --i think money is a better gift --his parents can put it away for him.

looking back --would you now rather have the money or your Benetton bear? just curious.

You know what - as a 13 year old - I appreciated the Benetton bear and being that I remember that 19 years later and not money amounts - I guess there's your answer. I don't know what an 8 year old would appreciate - I am not an 8 year old boy. I made a suggestion - she was looking for ideas. You have the right to totally disagree, but you really have no reason to be so antagonistic about it - it's a post about a PRESENT!!!

Re: 1st Communion Gift?

Reread your post - you definitely sound antagonistic.
I appreciated that someone took the time to think of me, my interests, my likes, and bought me something that I appreciated. That's why that person stood out - she was the only one who did that.

If he is going to get a check at some point and see this money - more power to him. I'm sure if you took a poll there were very few of us who were ever presented with a check or 'saw the money' from a Bat Mitzvah, Communion, Confirmation, etc

mrswask & kdelace --i was just sharing my opinion as well --i believe that $50 from two people is on the low side. i think you should cover your plate.

Re: 1st Communion Gift?

$150-200???? wow, you guys must be much wealthier than me!! last year my cousin had her daughter's communion party at the Millerridge Inn and received on average, between 50-75 per couple. a few of the older aunts and uncles gave $100 and my cousin felt AWFUL. she had the party at a hall b/c she came into some money and not b/c she wanted her kid to receive such big gifts.

i would give a bond, so that it's in the kids name.

cover your plate at a communion party? what has this world come to?

cover your plate!!!!!!!!! its a COMMUNION!!!!!!!!!!!!! you give what you can- the parents chose that place to have it- guests give what they can, not $$ to cover their plate.. that is ridiculous

kdelace --
what is your deal? am i not entitled to my opinion? yes, i cover my plate -- whether i am going to a communion, baptism or wedding!

Re: 1st Communion Gift?

kdelace, i completely agree!! covering your plate at a communion? that seems completely absurd to me...then again, i'm not part of the upper class, so maybe that's why i'm so shocked.

what do you mean what is my deal?
people shouldnt have to feel pressure to 'cover their plate'... whether its a communion, wedding.... you give what you can.. and the Watermill... that isnt a cheap place!!!

Re: 1st Communion Gift?

I would never try to cover my plate for a communion gift. It's not a wedding. The parents are not going to keep the money for themselves. You are giving money to the 7 year old, not their parents. I can tell you that for Kiera's christening, most of the gifts were between $50-100. Most couples gave between $75-100. We had some people that gave a lot more but that was the average.

I think that is fine for a communion as well. I also think a bond is a great idea. The kid will appreciate it later in life.
