I understand what you're saying.....but I don't think it applies in this situation. Jola already had a cat. That cat is her family. When another animal comes in to that situation and is immediately cruel to her cat, she should just wait it out? I don't think she should. She needs to look out for her original pet. I think it's terrible when people bring animals back to shelters and return them because they arent' ready to take on the responsibility....but I think it was right to take it back to the shelter in this case because it would not have been happy in her home....and neither would the original cat, or Jola or her husband!!

Re: .
My husband's family had 2 cats who were over 10 years apart and they lived together for 3 years before the older cat died at the age of 16
In those 3 years they never got along, the older cat stayed away but when the little one would come near her she would smack her and hiss.
There are pets that don't get along and my DH never had other pets besides these two cats at his parents house.
I want my DH to experience like I have, cats who love each other and will play with each other.
Ever since I can remember we had cats in my house. Like I mentioned before at one point I had 13 cats! (2 sets of litter)
When we moved from Brooklyn to LI we had a cat and couple years later my sister brought home a brother and sister. Well my older cat said this was his territory and didn't like the male kitten once he grew up, hated him so much that the cat ran away. My older cat kicked him out.
Like Lori explained for me, my DH and I did not want to get attached to this little girl and her never liking Misiu. Misiu wanted to be friends with her and she just would not have it.
She was tortured at her old place, with 35 cats in the house, she was all bones when we brought her home, her ears were attacked-she never got to eat at the old place because the other cats probably wouldn't let her eat. I can just imagine what she went threw in that house that she probably doesn't trust cats anymore. We believe she needs a home on her own-just her.

i am sorry if it sounded like a personal attack. i didnt mean to do so. its not that i dont believe she was wrong for you, i guess if it were me i wouldve tried harder. then agian, i wasnt there to see what occured. i guess i always feel that it will mostly work out in the end if you try hard enough. i just know for me personally i wouldnt have given up so easy, especially with what kind of life she has come from.
hopefully the shelter will know now NOT to adopt her out to a family with animals.

I would have to agree with Lolita on this one...1 week is not enough time to adjust. I also agree that once you bring an animal home you've made a commitment and a new responsibility...
Although there is nothing you can do about it now, I would seriously reconsider getting another cat...

Jola, you obviously want this topic to die, but I agree that you should have given both cats longer than a week to adjust. After 6 months my two are now friends, but it was very upsetting when the didn't get along in the beginning. I guess I can understand what made you give the kitty back, but you have to be committed to the adoption when you take it on and should have persevered. It may have worked out the best for both cats in the end.

Some animals are meant to be the lone pet. Especially if she came from a messed up environment originally, it might have 'wacked out' her personality. I think you did the right thing Jola. It sounds like you have years of experience with cats. I have had issues like this in the past and have tried and tried to make things work out. We had a cat for 16 years!! and couldn't make it work. She was just 'different'. She finally went completely mad and started biting my father daily to the point of drawing blood. 16 years and we gave her the best home possible. Poof, gone, just like that. Down to the pound. Doesn't mean we didn't try or wasn't able to provide another animal with a good home. I'm not saying the kitten was bad, but it wasn't the right choice for your home. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving her alone with your other cat and wondering what type of mess you'd be coming home to. If she was that agressive, things could have been terrible. If anything, you bought her time because now she'll be given the full allotted holding time for adoption. If you had never walked in, you can't say for sure she would have been placed. Don't blame yourself.
