I was semi-stalked. A guy who worked in a bodega in Brooklyn used to sit outside my apartment and look up at my window.
How do you know if you are cyber-stalked? Is that like getting a lot of email from someone you don't want to communicate with?

yup, IRL by an ex. it became cnfrontational on quitea few occasions. Unfortunately the laws then were nothing like they are now, and the cops were no help.
Also by a female friend of another ex. She was a psycho & tried to run me off the road when the ex & I broke up.

Re: Poll: Stalkers
I had the police at my house because I was getting over 30 prank phone calls a day, many of which were lewd. Well, the calls continued for two weeks. I have probably had close to 100 calls. Some have been hang ups, others just quiet on the line, and some from a man saying, 'I like your big t-i-t-s!'
Well, I traced the phone calls even though my caller ID said it was blocked. Unfortunately, the detective informed me that the guy could not be arrested because he did not threaten me. Apparently, it is ok to just harrass people. Well, then the detective left a message on my machine telling me that all of the calls came from Manhasset.
Where in Manhasset? MY BANK!!! That week the calls came, I went to deposit some engagement gifts in our honeymoon account. Well, I remember that as I was walking out, I felt that one of the male employees was looking at me. I did not think anything of it.
He got my information from my bank records. I ended up going to the bank and meeting with the VP. The calls ended. I never heard what happened.
1 out of 10 women are stalked during their lifetime.

Until I read am470 post (which is way more scary than my story), I forgot ... there was this guy from HS who pranked me for YEARS ... even when I changed numbers, he somehow got it. And when I lived in Albany & would come back home, the calls would start again ...
I should crash his 20th reunion (he was a year ahead of me) and see what became of him!

Re: Poll: Stalkers
Freshman year of college there was this guy who totally followed me around - I met him once(in passing before this). He was super skeevy. He told one of my guy friends 'he wouldnt stop til I was his' - EWWW. He would come to my room and stop at my friends rooms looking for me.
Finally I had one of my BIG guy friends tell him that if he didn't stop he would beat him up. It worked!

Yep, in real life, which then spilled into an online and phone stalkage scenario. He and I were *really* good friends for a long time, and the situation then took a nasty turn when I repeatedly refused to take the relationship to the next step. I'm embarrassed to say that the stalking went on for more than two years. Never got the police or anyone else (except some of my friends) involved.
Weirdly, I still miss being friends with him. Sounds like a trip down Codependency Lane, I know, but it's the truth.

Yes, in real life by an ex and cyber-stalked by a person I'd never met. Both ways are creepy, but it's definately scarier being stalked in real life.

me too.
In college, by one of the computer guys. I'd be in the lab, on line & he would email me & say that he was watching me & stupid things like that.

Re: Poll: Stalkers
I had an ex stalk me for about 2 years back in like 1996. He would follow me in his car when I went out. He would show up at party's I was at and peoples houses. He would sit in his car down the road listening to 'our' song in his car for hours and hours. He would write me tons of letters and call all the time. Even when I changed my # he would get the new one.
Actually 3 years ago (4 years later) I got a phone call from him where I worked I don't know how he found me but I told him I was engaged (I wasn't at the time). He actually said 'with a ring and all'? I was like yeah buy! I think he called a few times after too but I had left that job already!

Re: Poll: Stalkers
Real AND cyber, and it involved the police:
FH's old neighbor moved away 10 yrs ago. She showed up at his doorstep 2 years ago, and professed her undying love. ( puh-lease.) After some time, FH told her off, and said that he was dating someone (me) that was 'the one' . The girl grabbed his cell, got my phone #. She then went home (upstate NY), did a reverse directory search, and got my address. Somehow, and I still don't know how, the girl got my email address and was sending threatening emails, in addition to the phone calls I was already getting. I blocked her from my email, but the police encouraged me to unblock her, so they could have a record of what she was sending.
There were several occasions that she drove here from her home, 3 hours away, and parked herself right outside my house. Of course, when the cops showed up, she was nowhere to be found. The next morning, my car was egged.
Because the police had no way of proving that she was the one parked outside my house, and no one actually SAW her egg anything, they stopped going after her.
I had a lawyer friend draw up a very professional letter, and the calls/emails/visits promptly stopped.
