Re: Student teaching while Working?

i wasn't able to work. but, i also was taking 3 or 4 classes at the same time. if you're only student teaching and aren't taking any classes it probably wouldn't be too bad. i actually was waitressing a few nights a week in the beginning, but that only lasted about 2 or 3 weeks before i quit because it was just too much for me. i do know some people who were able to work part time, but for me I couldn't do it. I was also still living at home at the time so I was able to get by for a few months without working. good luck!

i was not able to work, so I started saving waaaay in advance before student teaching started.
some people are able to work nights while doing it....but i found i was too busy planning lessons and grading to do anything.
I was also living at home while student teaching - which helped a lot!

While student teaching, i was taking 3 or 4 classes, had a part time job on nights and weekends and I was also doing freelance graphic design... it was tough but i got through!

Yeah - I think it depends on the person - I know a few people who did it fine ... others preferred to focus on the student teaching

that's my fear!

And when I hear about all the lesson plans I am concerned. but, with physical education I doubt there will be much grading though

I had a ton of grading...but I teach English - I tink you shoudl be able to handle a part-time job without all of that on your back .
And as for lesson planning - if you have a good cooperative teacher, you can wok on them together

Re: Student teaching while Working?

I am quiting my full time (current) job at the end of august and start student teaching in sept. I don't have any plans to work until I see how the workload is...

I would like to find something part-time if possible..

I've never been out of work and the thought of no income (on my end) really stresses me out..

Re: Student teaching while Working?

it really all comes down to the subject you teach... i am art... so i would work hard on a lesson plan, introduce it, then the kids have a few weeks to work on it, so i really dont have much take home work for a week or so... where as FH is math, so he was home everyday after school coming up with lessons for the next day...

this was me too! i, like palebride, starting saving early too, so i could afford x-mas gifts and insurance and phone, etc. it wasn't too bad but it was exhausting trying to do it all.

I did not work while I was student teaching. I got my master's in secondary ed math, so I did do a bunch of tutoring during that time but there would have been no way I would have been able to work another job while student teaching. It was tight money wise, but well worth it.

I worked on the weekends and holiday's when I was student teaching. Let me tell you, it was not fun!! By the end of the semester I was SO burnt out!! But if you need the money, you have to do what you have to do!!

Re: Student teaching while Working?

my FH was unable to work - the district he was student teaching in requires LONG lesson plans for every day. They were about 3-4 pages a night! He'd commute an hour there, work til 4, get home at 5:30, write his 3-4 pages, eat dinner, then crash, only to be up at 5:30am the next morning.

He thought student teaching was harder than REAL teaching!

Your dh's schedule sounds like it's going to be mine..I heard the district I am STing is really good, but I can only imagine the requirements they have. Also, it's an HOUR away from me..ughhh
