so those of you who did not work, how did you pay your expenses? Additional loans?

Tuition for the Student teaching credits alone will be over 6K

We set aside most of our tax $$, which was a pretty decent amount to hopefully get us through those few months..this will pay for my half of the bills, any emergencies, etc...

I have also been putting aside a little bit from each of my paychecks...this $$ is more for me and my crazy spending habits.. and probably for christmas gifts..

I hope to start applying during STing..if I don't land anything right away (I finish in the middle of the school year, so I am not hopeful of finding a full time job at that time)..I might reapply to the company I am working at currently..

This whole thing is very stressful!!

ETA: dh is also looking into new jobs..more $$. He went on his 2nd interview yesterday. If he gets this job, it will help us big time during my STing!!

He had minimal living expenses, just cellphone, cable, insurance, and gas, because his parents were letting him stay at home, but the gas alone was a lot of money - he filled his 16 gallon tank 2x a week. (Looong commute.)

He dipped into his savings a little bit, because like you said, he had to pay the tuition on student teaching. (state school though, so it was less that $6,000.)

Believe it or not, he spent a decent amount of $ on teaching materials, too! Photo enlargements for observed lessons, laminations, 'treats' for good behavior, etc. He's in a 'high needs' district, and unfortunately, it took a rewards system to get good behavior for the majority of the time. Not to mention the printer cartridges he was flying through!

We didn't eat out at all for a few months, no movies or shopping, he bagged his lunches, etc.

Don't forget, its only 3 months. It may be a little rough, but you can DEFINITELY get through it!

Even through all the extra paperwork and the commute, he's lucky to have student taught where he did. He made some great connections with administration (maybe 'cause of his adorable smile ), and moved quickly to a sub position, then a permanent sub position (with benefits!!!), then a leave replacement, now a full position, all from January 2005 to now.

Good LUCK Jenny We know you'll be fine

my FH was unable to work - the district he was student teaching in requires LONG lesson plans for every day. They were about 3-4 pages a night! He'd commute an hour there, work til 4, get home at 5:30, write his 3-4 pages, eat dinner, then crash, only to be up at 5:30am the next morning.

He thought student teaching was harder than REAL teaching!

Your dh's schedule sounds like it's going to be mine..I heard the district I am STing is really good, but I can only imagine the requirements they have. Also, it's an HOUR away from me..ughhh

where will you be? you can FM if you'd prefer

i started student teaching in september, so basically, i saved a little from every check over the summer. then i still worked for all of september and that money ws saved completely. i tried to prepay my bills, like phone and insurance, so that i wouldn't get them, either. it helped that i didn't havae the expense of rent at the time. and the tuition just got tacked onto my loan.

I saved a ton of money in advance before I had to student teach...I figured out what my expenses would be for those months and then lived on a really tight budget (ask my friends, I never went out ).
Luckily, I was at home, and as long as I was in school, I didn't have to pay rent...so if that is an option for you - you might want to consider it.

I didn't take out any loans for my Masters...I paid for it completely out of pocket....thinking about that now - i can't imagine how I did it - sort of like paying for a wedding. Seems impossible....but can be done...

Good luck!
It's great that you're planning in advance for this...you have plenty of time to save
