Hmmm...interesting that you brought this up. Last night on TV there was a documentary about people living with Torretts syndrome. Several of them were treated with medication - which didn't necessarily help with the outbursts, but minimized the twitching which allowed them to carry on with everyday activities (like washing dishes, cutting their own food, etc - you don't realize how dangerous every day tasks can be when you have compromised control of your motor skills) - but the medication had nasty side effects, like drowsiness, slowed response, dehydration, and for lack of a better phrase 'fuzzy mentality'. Many of them were out of work because they couldnt' stay awake throughout the day. There was one guy, however, who refused the medication. He said he didn't want to alter his psyche in any way and that people would just have to learn to deal with his outbursts. He claimed that the swearing didn't bother him, it was others' reactions to it.

I'm not sure I agree with him totally - he was basically saying that people shouldn't be so put off by it - I think it takes a certain amount of knowledge and patience to deal with someone like that, especially if you're not aware of why they are shouting profanities at you (as was the complaint of many a supermarket check out person)...but it was an interesting point.

Really don't have an answer to your question...

Sometimes I foolishly let myself have a reaction to people who are hostile, but really, ignoring is the only way to go.

We have two students at school who have Tourette's.....I dont' know if either of them are on mediciation, but I do know it does effect their everyday life.
The kids in the school have been through sensitivity training in elementary school so that they know how to deal with it.....

As for the the original question - I like to play with them and make them crazy!!!!

For the record, this post wasn't about anyone on the boards. I was looking for advice on how to handle a friend of FH's.

I was just kidding with my response as well.

My secretary is unstable and hostile. I just don't talk to her at all, which is kind of difficult since she sits 5 feet from my office. When she speaks to me I do not make eye contact and don't answer. When I do answer, she manipulates my responses and lies about what I say.

Why is your DH friends with him? Have you told him the friend squicks you? Am I using squicks the right way?

i have a co-worker like this - gets very pissy for no apparent reason and won't speak to me for days on end - yes, shes a grown woman. i ignore it, i ave no time to babysit and tell her she's great so that she'll speak to me again
