Re: You're Engaged, but weren't you just broken up?

I think the term is 'rebound dating' and I'm not so sure how I feel about it.

I think sometimes breaking up can show up just how much you love and miss the other person. So I wouldn't think anything of it.

ETA: Are they engaged to the person they were broken up with, or someone new entirely?

If they're happy (truly happy) then I'm happy. Sometimes the universe works in the strangest of ways.

Did I misunderstand? Do you mean someone who breaks up with their S/O and gets engaged to someone else? If so, then my answer above.

If you mean someone that breaks up with their S/O only to get back together and engaged...well, like nov04LIbride wrote - sometimes you realize who you should be with. I went through that 'self exploration' phase...it was worth it and allowed me to see what I wanted. Plus my BF (now DH) got to see what life was alone too...

ETA: Life alone sucked! But we met young and had dated for 4 years and knew we wanted to be together...not sure about your friend. Although my friends weren't super supportive at first (we were young, some thought too young). I don't think it should be something to laugh about, but if you have genuine concerns you should speak to her.

Re: You're Engaged, but weren't you just broken up?

I am actually going to a wedding in November that this applies to.

The girl and guy broke up around Xmas time, 2004, because he 'never wants to get married'....anyway, he was at the New Years Eve party I was at, and he hooked up with 5 diff girls in front of me, and then apparently slept with one of them that night.

I guess he must have had his epiphany after that, because next thing I know they were engaged

Sorry, but I'll never forget his behavior at the New Years Party...I just don't think that sleeping and hooking up with loads of other people is the right way to figure out that you should have stuck with your original significant other...you know?

engaged to the person they were originally dating.

I don't care much either way, but I do think it's comical. I feel bad for her, but she's doing the WORLD a favor taking him!

Wow I wonder if we are talking about the same person, my friend broke up w BF 2 days later he came back with a ring. and now there getting married

honestly, I don't know the girl, just the guy. And I know his past and the fact that he asked this poor girl to marry him, is why I laugh.

Oh, got it. It's hard to gauge...but I wish them both luck. Marriage is not the cure for anything and it's certainly not a fix all. I hope they're doing it for the right reasons.

A college friend of mine met someone right before we graduated. He really liked her but it wasn't mutual. She was dating someone else she really liked.

Fast forward a few months, and she's living with him (the guy she didn't like at first). Then they got engaged, after about two or three months. They married two years later (with six months of a 'trial' break and wedding postponement in there) but the marriage ended within a few months.

Some people are just impetuous and/or are hopeless romantics.

I dated a guy for while, we broke up (he cheated on everyone he has ever dated), and then he started dating a mutual aquaintance. He called me one day telling me about their relationship (which I really didn't want to hear about). He actually said to me that they were at the point of their relationship that they would either 'break up or get married.'

I never understood that statement. They eventually got married (after postponing the wedding at least once). They are still together.

Re: You're Engaged, but weren't you just broken up?

I have two friends from school that dated on and off for 10 years. Their last break up happened at a club where there was a major public display.
This one was accusing that one of sleeping with so-and-so and the other one was denying it. Drunk people were putting in their two senses and adding tid bits of rumors.
None the less they stayed apart again for nearly a year and they got back togther and he recently proposed.
It really is quite comically, but somehow they always end up back together. I just hope they make it down the asile in one piece and their is no drama at the wedding. But we will have to wait and see.
