I've had both and prefer the hardwood. Laminate won't scratch and is very durable overall. The wood is softer sounding to walk on (not as loud or hollow sounding even with the thicker padding), can be refinished, and is a natural material. Laminate is basically a formica. They have the laminate with a thin wood layer on top. My mother has it and hates it b/c it shows every ding.

Re: Hardwood Floors or Laminate
I'm not a big fan of laminate. We have it in our townhouse now and it's starting to come up and has chipped in certain spots. I think if it's a low traffic area then it is probably okay but we have it in the entry and kitchen and it's just not durable.

go with hardwood. Laminate looks fake, in my opion. Wood is also better if you ever sell your home.

Re: Hardwood Floors or Laminate
I have the Quick Step Brand of Laminate in my living room. It's a light maple color and looks very good. Not saying it looks exactly like wood, but the cost of putting a hardwood floor in that room would have been about 40% more. The laminate is very easy to take care of (low maintenance)
I have hardwood in some other rooms and ceramic tile too. Now tile is very low maintenance. We are going to take our stairs and hardwood them for asthetic and feline purposes (if you get my drift). Just say no to carpets if you have cats!
