Which I would totally buy if that's what the writers were selling, but they did it in such a clumsy and sudden way that the character's motive seem so outrageous.
Seriously, he hatches a plot to stage a kidnapping so he can steal the arsenal because people touched his stuff? Isn't that a bit...much? Even fror Sawyer? Even for LOST?
I like that Sawyer didn't fall into the rote good-guy role. An island full of martyrs and saints would be tedious. You need the selfish badass, like I said, but you don't conjure him up out of nowhere. We needed at least 2 more episodes of Sawyer growing troubled with his likable-hero status to really send it home. The con in this episode marked him as cruel, which his character isn't. He's completely selfish and pre-occupied with self-preservation, but he's not evil.
Unless that's another tick of the island in which case.... stupid!!
It was just laziness on the writers part, and poor plotting and bad timing. I expect way more from this show and this season it just hasn't been delivering.
You are right in that it was sudden. I agree with you there - 2 more episodes of him evolving a little more would have made more sense. But maybe you are on to something here about the island...I've been thinking this for awhile also. The island seems to 'do' something to people that changes their personalities - they get paranoid (ala Charlie), hallucinate, etc. Some kind of insanity virus he he... perhaps the reason why quarantine was written on the inside of the hatch....
And it's got Sawyer now. Charlie's definitely got it, Locke - maybe a little, Jack, definitely - he's changed alot... and so on. So maybe it's part of that. Maybe they are trying to make it more pronounced and that's why they did Sawyer's 180 so abruptly... ?

Re: LOST: the long yawn
Yeah for the return of the Lost recap.
Though, I can't agree with the boring. I liked the episode - though I agree that they seemed to make Sawyer do an about face. But, in the beginning, remember when he wouldn't give Shannon her medicine? That was pretty evil. Maybe they felt he was looking to soft.

Let's not forget Rousseau's story of 'the sickness' taking over her team. Maybe that's what's going on here as well? People are really starting to act shady!

Oh yeah, and did anyone notice that that was Kate's Mom that served Sawyer and Gordy in the diner? I love those connections!
And what's up with Hurley and Sayid playing with the radio and Hurley saying the music could be from another 'time'?
