wow, I had my invites and my thank you notes hand cancelled without any problems. The teller at the Forrest Hills, Queens post office offered to hand cancel my thank you notes so I said great thanks. (I had over 200 thank you notes) My invites were hand cancelled at the Locust Valley post office (Nassau co.). Apparently they even weighed too much for the amount of postage I put on (I had the 60 cent stamps) and they even went through. I had them weighed at another post office and the other post office said they needed the 60 cent stamps. I am sorry the post office is not being nice to you.
