A psychologist won't be able to prescribe medications. Only a psychiatrist can. Strattera is a stimulant that is primarily used to treat ADD/ADHD. Was he diagnosed with either of these?

Yes, you're right... it's a nonstimulant... sorry I was eating when I typed it. It's a well used drug... some of the psychiatrists I work with prescribe it for the kids. I suggest seeing a child psychiatrist regularly for prescriptions.

You should also look into a nutritionist, sometimes a childs diet can cause a misdiagnosis of ADHD. Just something to look into before putting him on meds

Amy-make sure if you are going to put him on meds to get him to a doctor regularly for monitoring. A therapist/behavioralist is probably right. Do not just keep him on meds w/o him seeing a doctor on a regular basis.

I was just about to type this. I have seen a lot of success with diet techiniques when I worked with foster children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. A behaviorist can also help you to communicate better with Gabe but giving you some things to try.

I have to compliment you on how brave you are. All too often I see parents in despair about what to do with their children in sitations like these. It is great that you are asking questions and starting to get some answers. I agree with asking about diet, but I would also continue monitoring Gabe's behaviors and communications through psychiatrists/behaviorists.

Im glad you are finally getting some answers and solutions. I agree with the other girls. Try and regulate his diet. I see you've already started but hang in there. It takes time for the body to get adjusted.

Re: Back from doctor with Gabe
when my brother was little my mom cut down his dairy, and cut out the bleached flour and pasta and things like that. It helped out. Just make sure he gets his calcium somewhere else! and stick with it.
Also, try giving him 'Berry Keen' ( I think it's now called Children's DHA) It is make by Nordic Naturals, and they sell it at Whole Foods and I think GNC too. It is a combination of Omega 3 & 9. I have been giving it to my daughter for a while now. I feel that since she has started taking it that her consintration levels have gone up, amongst other things. It can't hurt, and Omega 3-6-9 are things that a body needs anyway. It might be worth a shot.
