I wouldn't do it tit for tat. Give what you truly feel is a fair gift. Technically etiquette says you do not have to give a gift although it is a nice gesture.

Re: E-party gift for guest that stiffed us?
I honestly don't remember who didn't give us a gift for our engagement party....
The gifts didn't really matter to me... I was happy that everyone came and celebrated with us.
That being said, personally, I would give them the same gift regardless of whether or not they gave me a gift at our engagement party.
JMO!
Edited for spelling.

Re: E-party gift for guest that stiffed us?
thats awful! ... 20 bux, u can barely go out to a dinner with that money
and yes i KNOW ITS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY!! - but if someone is financially well well off, its just appropriate to atleast give more than 20 bux, anyways, i would give them 40$ double what you gave.. .. JMO ..

Im a jerk, and I agree its not about the money-but thats just sad for someone who is now having a bigger party. Thats how I feel. I would maybe get them something small off their registry, thats me though!

Re: E-party gift for guest that stiffed us?
20 bucks!!!! that is sooooo rude!!!! ugh!!!
Ok, I know that some people may not agree with me, but this is something that really P*ssed me off!!! I know that 'etiquette' says that a gift is not necessary, but common sense and basic human decency says that if you are invited to an engagement party and especially if you are financially well you, should give a gift! Now, that gift should really be cash. I'm sorry, but engagement parties are usually given for the families to meet, and to help the future newly weds out a bit. I have gone to engagement parties, and I give a very generous cash gift. I reserve the gift gifts for the bridal shower, and the wedding I give cash. I was so shocked when some people gave us stuff that we did not even registered for... A clock, and glasses??? I don't know, but I was like, gee what if this stuff does not go with my decor. JMO
Any way, yes a cheap gift of 20 bucks is rude, but you should do the right thing, and give a gift that you yourself would like. That way you are the bigger person, and believe me, they will get the message....

agreed 100%. or spend $20 on a gift off their registry. i would feel differently if they were not well-off financially, but if they had no problem showing up to your e-party with a $20 gift card, then you shouldn't be embarrassed to do the same thing.

Re: E-party gift for guest that stiffed us?
I'd give them $20 right back! Im sorry, but its called recirpricating!
We did pretty good for our engagement party, considering it was less than 50 people. . . or about 50 people. However, at our wedding, Mine was at Villa Lombardi's, we had so many extra things there, a full venise, and my parents paid A REALLL LOT of $ per plate, and a couple gave us a gift that i didnr think was good at all, considering i have her wedding next yr. . . me and my Dh are like, 'well no, that amount is not right to give for a nice place, but we're recepricating!' and Im not argueing with the mR!
give thwm $20! ur married now! go buy urself something...start splurging ;o)

I totally agree. Give them more than they gave you, but not as much as you would normally give. I know I sound super childish and petty, but really, $20??! I don't think so. We had friends who are not well off at all give us more than that! I know that it's the thought that counts, but who from NY goes to an e-party and brings $20?

I would give them $20. If they felt it was ok ot give $20 then they probably think its ok to receive $20.

Re: E-party gift for guest that stiffed us?
how do you know that they are well off? have you seen their bank statements?
i know so many people that appear well off, but in reality they have no $ in the bank bc they spend it all (and then some)....
so with that being said - I would just go to the mikasa or pottery barn outlet and buy them a nice gift (martini glass set or a nice picture frame) that isnt $$$$.

Re: E-party gift for guest that stiffed us?
Etiquette says that engagement party gifts aren't necessary, and that only family and a few closest friends are expected to bring anything at all. Maybe it's different in NY than in the rest of the country, I don't know. The E-Party is just a chance for the families to meet, and an excuse for a fun party a year before the wedding. But the point is, since the gift is optional anyway, give or don't give them anything you want, and don't feel guilty about it.
