Re: Preggos and Someday-Mommies-To-Be (and smarty-pantses)
my oppinion: because child takes father last name.... so it's like a full name sake, plus the egos on men....

Beats the crap out of me. I just know that DH always wanted our son to be named after him and his father.
So, my will be Christopher Michael Devine, III.

Re: Preggos and Someday-Mommies-To-Be (and smarty-pantses)
Because the same way that a woman takes her husband's last name, the same way some men want their sons to carry on their name...I totally agree that its a male ego thing BUT it is traditional as it is passed on from generation to generation.
Im actually reading the biography of Marie Antoinette now, and back then, the girls did not necessarily only take on their mothers' names, but they also took on grandmothers' and other 'great' relatives' names.

Both of my brothers and I had the brilliant idea of giving our sons the middle name of our father, who passed away when we were young. My older brother was the first to have a baby so he took the name

It's more tradition in my family - an Irish thing. My father's middle name was his father's first name and my brother's middle name is my father's first name. But it's stopping there cause my brother's wife refuses to have children b/c it would mean she can't travel around the world with the Sec. of State

I think its just one of those things that are stuck in tradition. Back in 'the day' women were not really important. The men got everything - everything was men men men, males inherited while women got crap. So boy babies were named after their fathers to carry on the legacy of a name. The girl babies would eventually marry and leave their familes to live with their husband's family and would take his name.

Re: Preggos and Someday-Mommies-To-Be (and smarty-pantses)
well, the Greeks still do (at least DH's family)...I think is cultural...they do it for both girls & boys....DH's brother had a baby girl and named her after their mother....If we have a girl and I don't want to name her after my Mom the next thing the Greeks do is change their father's name into a female's name..his father's name is Dimitrios so it will be Dimitria or vs if it is a boy....The girls are usually named after their mom and/or grandmothers...where the boys are named after their father & grandfathers...

Not an issue for us. We are Jewish. We name after the deceased. Actually, the Sephardim can and do name after the living but for the most part, we name after the dead.

I don't know, all I know is my DH [michael] wants to name a son after HIM! after begging and pleading and having him agree that if we ever have a boy we;d name him Anthony Vincent [Vincent for my grandfather] so he replied 'what about michael vincent' and I said hell no, cause 1 guy went totally stalker on me, and his name was michael vincent! so it brings back bad memories and nightmares!
but turthfully i dont know why that is. if i have a girl, i want to name her Marissa and I'm Melissa. I think thats cute, but wouldn';t name my daughter after Me! that'd be weird. . . i don't think i;ve ever even heard of that!

I have no clue but I'd have to agree with the comment about their ego. My Dh wants our son to be named after him too. I am not that crazy about the idea, but it means a lot to him so I won't fight it. All I know is if we ever have a girl....I am naming her!!! I guess we'll see what happens whenever we have kids

my cousin's wife's name is Christine and they named their daughter Christina but they call her Chrissy . Not typical, but thought it was nice.
Our son will have the English version of Dh's first name-his choice...tradition (maybe) male ego maybe...we just like it too

I REFUSE to do this. DH has his dad's name and is a II and it is annoying as he** with credit cards and accounts and a bunch of other junk. My brother is named after my dad and my dad after my grandfather and it is just TOO confusing.
I have never even given him the option of it being a possibility.

ya know i heard something about how fathers who name their son after them are actually harder on that child than their other children, or something along those lines.

My dh bm was named first and second name after his father. Apparently its been a tradition for yrs in his family. He wants us to name our first boy after my DH which we both disagree with him on. But his sister is also named after their mother. Its kinda weird. You have the set of parents and the two kids all with the same set of names. No jrs for us thank you.
