HMMM!! I don't know I guess it was a male ego traditon started way back.
If we have a boy, we actually decided not to name him after DH. We rather not have a Jr.
But, if we have girls, their middle names are going to be Marie ( Which is my grandma, mother and aunts middle names.) If we have two girls, the others middle name will be Ann (Which is my MIL middle name).
I am also thinking of naming a child after my grandmother, who I never met. She died when my dad was 16.

Honestly... this isn't the case in my family nor DH's. My first name is my mother's first name, my middle name is my paternal grandmother's. My sister's name is the female version of my father's middle name as well as my paternal grandfather's first name. Her middle name is my maternal grandmother's first name.

As for DH's - he has only one sister - and her first name is also her mother's first name. Yet he has two brothers and none of them are named after their father.

I think it just go by what a particular set of parents decide instead of a cultural wide trend.

JMHO.

I totally refuse this tradition. I want my children to have their own identity.

my ex boyfriend who passed away was named after his dad and his sister was named after their mom. weird right?

my FH's parents were lacking intelligence when naming their boys. dads name is richard thomas, FH is richard michael, FBIL sean richard, FBIL michael thomas

I'm named after my mother and DH and I have talked about naming a daughter after me. My family is Italian and all of my aunts and uncles have a daughters named after my grandma and sons named after my grandpa!

I agree though that probably the boys are named after their fathers more often because they keep that name forever, while the girls names will changed when they get married. There can never be a second for a woman unless she keeps her maiden name.

I don't know, but my husband is the 3rd, so tradition stops here. There will be no Charles ***** The Fourth. It's not happening.

male egos.

DH is supposed to be the 4th but his grandmother didn't like the middle name and changed it, so he's only the 2nd. This in my opinion takes away from the whole legacy that was intended and I see no need to perpetuate it...besides, I am sick of his first name [the conversations i have to have with his mom are annoying...i can't put another girl/woman through that], feel that if I'm going to name a kid hisfirstname newmiddlename only to have to use the middlename, why not just refrain from using DH's first name????????? we are NOT having a 3rd or changing up the middle name. I am deadset against it. i told him if he had a real issue with it, he could take it out on his grandmother as she ruined it.

DH and I agreed to this before we were married...he tried to change his mind after we got pregnant...I am far too stubborn. besides, my daughter's middle name is the feminine version of his first name and many people who do'nt know he's her step-father think she was named after him! if we have a girl, her first name will be the feminine version of his middle name...and i swear, that was a coincidence!

dh has the same name as his grandfather-n so does his cousin. a lot of ppl used to think i went out w/his cousin-bc we were in the same grade LOL

but oddly, dh HATES the idea of naming children after him or his father..

my oppinion: because child takes father last name.... so it's like a full name sake, plus the egos on men....

agreed! DH is named after his grandfather, his sister is named after their mom, and his lil brother is named after their dad! nothing is original!!!!
